What's the best program to do it? None of the stuff I have now reads .m4a files. Free is better but a decent payware program would be alright too.

I use Linux. I use mplayer to convert m4a to wav, then lame to convert wav to mp3.

MediaMonkey can convert them. You'll need to use a Winamp Plug-in to get it to play the m4a files, but once you do, you can convert to and from any of the supported filetypes.

Here's a link to a plugin that allows MediaMonkey to play m4a.

Thank you very much! I already use MediaMonkey (awesome program!). Got the plugin and converted them to mp3 with no problems.
