Have an opportunity to buy a Python, stainless 4", ribbed barrel.
    $659.
Gunshop owner says it's a Python. But nowhere on this gun does it
    say Python.
So question is, Is this a fake? did they make fakes?
Were any pythons made that don't actually say Python?
All it says is "colt...Manufacturing...Hartford Conn" that little line
    is on the barrel.
That's it. It LOOKS like a python, but honestly I am a novice about them.
Posted on another forum but nobody really knew the answer.

Some people put S&W's and Colts together and called them Smythons and a couple of other names too. But I would assume that it would say S&W somewhere on the barrel:dunno:Get the serial number off of the gun and call Colt and ask them about it.

Every Python I've seen says PYTHON in large letters on the left side of the barrel.

I have never owned one, but have seen several. All of the ones I have seen had the word "Python" on the barrel.
You probably knew that Colt made revolvers other than pythons. I say glock 2740 has a good idea about getting the serial # and calling Colt.
    Good luck.

Colt used to make the "Diamondback" that was a Python look alike in .38 cal. Every Python I ever saw said so on the barrel.

    That is odd...

It is .357 isn't? Because .44 are Anacondas.

also i think they are all nickel or blue ,

if its stainless it would be very easy for them to remove markings saying its either a python, or a cheaper model, or one of the smythons like said above,

nickel and blue have to be refinished, but stainless would only need to be polished or bead blasted,

Colt made SS Pythons, especially when they built the Python Elite. I have a 6" SS Python Elite in the safe.

To OP, if it dosen't say Python on the barrel I'd be very sceptical that it's a Python.

I am skeptical. Now curious. I am getting the serial number and calling
colt. It's a colt, of that I am about positive.
Did diamondbacks or troopers always say it?
    This gun says absolutely nothing.

    How do you know?

Pythons and Diamondbacks have that designation plainly illustrated on the left side of the barrel.

Diamondback may look a hair like the Python, but the Trooper doesn't look anything like the Python.

I wonder if it may be a Python but with a replacement barrel?

Please post pictures, I can think of half a dozen plausable but unlikely explanations varying from a rare and valuable model to a frankengun.

If it's a Python the serial number should compute. I wonder if it's a replacement barrel.

If it is a true Python, it will have "PYTHON" written on the barrel. All my Pythons have it. Even my 2 1/2" Python does. Take a look!
