I have been looking for a good lever action 30-30 for awhile now. well i found one today. Its a marlin 336. It has deff seen some use but it looks to be in really good shape. They want 200 for it.

Is there any thing particular i should look for that would result in me passing on this deal? What i mean is there anything about used marlins that should be cheched other than their basic functioning.

It is a good simple gun. If it looks good and the lever seems smooth, buy it. I perfer the older ones. I have a 1968 model that is great!!

He said it. Ive got a Marlin 336, its had probably 5000 rounds through it and I have had no problems nor had to replace any parts. Its a great all around rifle, can be used for hunting, home defense and its plain fun to shoot.

That is an outstanding price for, IMO, one of the best rifles ever made.

Around these parts my 336 is all I ever use for deer. Got an 06 and a 270, but they just stay in the gun cabinet. Just mount a low power scope on it, sight it in for 125 yards and you're good to go out to at least 150 yards. Rarely takes me more than one 150 grain bullet per deer.

    well boys i got screwed!!!!!!!!

I was using 170gr Win Soft tips. After the first round i went to eject the round and it wouldn't budge. I finally got it out and the brass was buldged at the bottom. I had to use a cleaning rod just to get the damn thing out. WTF. So i load another round and the same thing. So now im tinking its a weak barrel or the bad ammo.

I call my buddy and ask him what he thinks is wrong with it, he doesnt know but tells me to drop by. He has a new marlin 336. He gives me one of his rounds, Rem, and i shoot it....SAME DAMN THING!!!!WTF he takes one of my rounds and shoots it just fine and ejects it just fine.

So im thinking either its a weak barrel or someone rechambered it.
The place i got it from was closed so im going in the morning to talk to them. Either i want my money back or store credit or im going to raise all kinds of Hell!!

    What do yall think.:steamed:

you just got a marlin 336 for 175 dollars,

the receiver alone is worth that much,

if you can post pictures of the 3030 brass after its fired i can probably tell you what is happening to cause it,

Ill try to post some pics. At the bottom the bass is buldge all away around. Theres about an inch of stress marks that are deep enough to catch your finger nail on.

Sorry to hear that. Don't give up hope, there might be an easy fix to the problem. I know its not the ammo, my 336 feeds and ejects anything. The best thing you could do is have a gun smith look at it. In the future make sure a guns action works before firing. Good luck.

Also you MAY be right about someone re chambering it.

i dont have an iphone or text messaging,

but i do think that i can help you, i have worked on lots of marlins,

and what your saying sounds like the chamber is just out of speec, not cut for an entire other cartridge,

unless its one of the dirivitives of the 3030, as their are other cartridges that use the 3030 brass

Did you verify that it is marked 30-30? The 336 comes in other calibers.

The action is very smooth and works a round well, i couldnt fire it though and thats where the problem lies.

What do i do about the chamber being out of spec, that makes sence though. The barrel is letting it expand. I found a barrel on gunbrokers for 45 bucks buy it now.

And yes it is marked 3030.

if its a barrel for a 336 and you have some basic tools and gun smithing knowledge you can do it yourself,

or a gun smith will install one for probably 50 bucks,

and its not necesarily the barrel thats letting it expand, but the chamber,

they cut the chamber into the barrel itself,

it sounds like either badly cut, cut for a different caliber,
