Anyone know what this is and what it could have been used for?

Start redoing our closet and ran into it. Pretty sure it’s not true front door chimes. Previous owners had a security system installed which is still here but has not been reactivated. This thing is close to the security system main box where I think the sensors were home runned. If that helps at all. TIA.

It appears to be a (line voltage to low(er) voltage) transformer of sorts.

All above are correct ... It is a doorbell transformer. They're seldom part of modern doorbell systems, or are internally mounted in the doorbell itself. Output is probably in the 24VAC range.
WARNING: The two wires appear to be still wired-up to line voltage (115VAC). Just be careful and insulated from them when disconnecting the wires.

The four smaller, red&white disconnected wires are probably from the doorbell button.

Probably a doorbell, maybe an old school security system.
