    Obvious unrelated questions but:

    1. Can I make dupliate keys on modern vehicles that have the computer chip recognition technology? I have a new VW and a Honda that only came with two keys and I need a third...Home Depot says I have to get it from the manufacturer for about $80...Is this true?

    2. Are there any ways to get one's daughter a better chance to get accepted to a large university in addition to grades, community service...etc? "I wish I knew the director of admissions" type of thing.

I made one for my Jeep. It didn't start but it did set off the factory alarm system.

    Large cash donation?

My ex/gf was a director in the admissions department at a large state U here. About the only thing that mattered was grades. Extra activities didn't matter ect. Have decent test scores and grades and bring money.

It's probably different with more competitive colleges, but not for most.

The chipped keys are available on Ebay. Or I can provide you with an email address to a seller. Any key shop can cut them to match. Then you need to program it. For instance my Ford you insert an original key, follow a sequence of turning the key on and off, then insert the new key to transfer the code. Or a dealer will do it for an hour labor.

The right money will get the daughter into any college.

High ACT/SATs are a must. A lot of people can score 'average' but an above average score really stands out (In my experience).

LARGE donation. Doesn't have to be cash, but it has to be large.

Sorry I didn't read all the posts, but.. yes you can, typically you can get the key cheaper off of EBAY or some other online company, however you will have to take it to a dealer to get the key programmed, bottom line your looking at well over $100 to buy a key and get it programmed. A co-worker paid close to $135 by the time he bought a key, had it cut and then programmed. He did have a few cut that would unlock the door, but would not start the car because of not being programmed.

Go to a dealership. They can make you more keys. Odds are they will need your vin # and the current key.

With good grades and good test score, she should be able to get into a good state school. If you are looking for something different than that, things get interesting.

Note that in most metro areas there is one or more locksmith who can cut the keys and program them for you.

Not all keys can be programed by the "push this flip that twist this X times" methods. Some cars require clipping into the cars computer with programming tools and configuring them for new keys.

The smith will have to have _all_ the keys to the car when you have it done. If your wife has HER key with you, when the smith is done her key will not longer start the car, although it should open the doors.

BTW, it's best to reprogram all remote door lock buttons at the same time.

In regard to college admissions, it depends on the college. You said "large" university. Do you mean large, as in a big state university, or do you mean highly selective?

For highly competitive colleges, the ones who have 100 applicants for each incoming freshman position, high scores are -not- enough. They help, but they're not by themselves, enough.

My daughter, for example was admitted to pretty much all the schools she applied to because her grades and test scores were "good enough" and she was a woman, applying to engineering schools, with a history as a state champion in speech and debate.

"A girl engineer who can talk!" We want her!

Also, Seriously urban schools were interested in a Kansas girl as part of their "diversity" program.

So, assuming her grades are good enough, and her test scores are good enough, apply with an emphasis in hard sciences or engineering. (Note that after her first semester, she can always CHANGE majors...) Make sure she has good science and math skills coming out of high school. (Note that pre-med does not count.)

Experience with either competitive speech or debate helps.

Having interesting ethnicity helps. Note that interesting ethnicity does not necessarily mean race. My white daughter from Kansas was exotic in NYC. She was exotic in many schools because she was raised as a Baha'i and was a religious minority. She was careful that her religious background was mentioned in her essays.

Arrange to contact a local alumni and have an interview. Make sure that their reference is on your application.

None of these things will make up for inadequate grades or test scores. But once you're above the bar, they have to use other tools to choose WHICH ones they take.

If you have two keys you can usually program the third if they are transponder keys. For my jeep grand Cherokee the key was $160 + a lot to program it, so they can be quite expensive.

Some car keys can be user programmed with an original key and some cannot. I don't know of anyplace that can cut VW keys other than VW, let alone program them.

If anyone is interested I can 100% vouch for this guy. He sells the keys and can provide instructions if your car will self program. Some keys he can even pre cut if you provide a vehicle code. Tell him you got his name from the Ford Sport Trac website as he is a sponsor and key expert there. His name is Larue at Carolina Lock & Key

Some shopping malls have kiosk that can duplicate the car keys. There are 2 in my vicinity. My wife lost the key and remote and it cost me around $85 for them couple years back. The guy even went out to the car to make sure they worked. Dealer wanted over $200.00
