The National Bureau of Investigation Academy is located in Baguio at the top of Session Road right behind the NBI CAR (Cordillera Autonomous Region) compound. It was first set up around 1996 or 1997 to serve as an institution for incalculating the basic aspects of criminal investigation and other law enforcement matters to prospective NBI Agents and Special Investigators. Due to the strict application procedures, there is no set date when the NBI Academy opens. Training is an average of four months, and includes such subjects as CQB training, arson investigation, murder investigation, fraud investigation, etc.

One has to be either a lawyer or CPA to be an Agent. Otherwise, one enters the NBI as a Special Investigator.

    julianz,

if i'm not mistaken, you have to be a college graduate to qualify as an SI. NBI used to allow Civilan Agents but i think the current director terminated all contracts due to incidents of abuse. according to my friend who is still an SI, many CAs readily brandish their weapons compared to the real agents and SIs. however, i think the wealthy chinese CAs were retained as they lend valuable logistic support like vehicles. i could be wrong though

Why is the NBI Academy not mentioned in the www.nbi.gov.ph website?

There's no specific reason why it isn't mentioned, it's just not something that is known outside NBI circles. Another reason why it's not mentioned is because it's mentioned to prospective applicants who pass the stringent application procedures, not beforehand so as not to give any false hopes. The training in the NBI Academy was very stimulating, both physically and mentally. Aside from that, the training curriculum was set-up to match what is being taught overseas.

The original text of Republic Act 157 specified lawyers or those with 10 plus years in law enforcement, specifically with supervisory experience. Because of the scarcity of lawyers applying at that time, CPAs (and later on other degree holders) were given a chance to apply. As to the question of issue handguns, we still issue the old .38s and .357s. Those who were fortunate to get the Glocks were, well, really good at getting them since it's hard to trade-up for a new gun, especially when you're issue is about 20-30 years old.

Can agents carry their privately-owned weapons? Any restrictions? Thanks.

No restrictions, bro, as long as you can demonstrate competency in your duty weapon. We're very big on Accidental Discharges and even if you do it only once, you're subject to an internal investigation and possible administrative sanction. So it really is up to the individual if he wants to carry a personal weapon, as long as he can prove that he won't mess up with it.;z
