    That's funny.

I served two years on an ocean-going Minesweeper (MSO then MSC) in 1957 -1959. Two years was the maximum. It was considered "Arduous Sea Duty".

MSO was 180 feet long and all wood. We had Thompsons for all the crew (60) when sweeping near shore.

From the report I read, their charts showed the reef was 8 miles away.

They should have means to determine depth. I do for my fishing boat, to 600 feet.

See those waves breaking? That is what us boaters like to call...
    a sign.
My boat has pretty good electronics, a chart plotter, and sonar/depth indicator. I would like to think a Navy ship would have much better electronic technology, especially when sweeping for mines. Me thinks someone was not paying attention.

the Navy is unforgiving of mistakes, USS Port Royal ran around some years back due to equipment failure and the CO was canned

this ship is going to have to be cut off the reef, the Pacific Fleet will be down one minesweeper, and the Navy will have to pay compensation to the Philippines for damages

He will probably be allowed to retire

I believe most minesweepers are pretty old.

I wonder if a depth finder could potentially set off a land mine?

Apparently the Navy has been caught up in the ADA and had to have charts printed in Braille to accommodate certain officers.

Our ship had sonar and would not detonate mines.
