I was in the basement working on my bike when I heard some faint meowing outside. So I went out a couple of times to look for the source and narrowed it down to the back porch. I tried to see it but could only hear its meowing so I decided to wait and see if it would come out. A skunk went walking by and apparently the kitten became curious and came out to get a closer look at the skunk. I tried to reach down and grab it (the kitty, not the skunk) but it slipped back under the porch. So stupid me...I became inpatient and decided to scare it out by gently poking around under the porch with a stick. Well, I sure did that. It took off like Jesse Owens across the street. Fortunately it didn't get hit by a car in the process. I just figured it probably wouldn't come back.

So fast forward to the next night. My wife and I were coming back from diner when we observed our neighbors across the street hanging out on their front porch listening to the same meowing I heard the night before. The kitten had ended up in their yard. So my wife who is much more graceful than I, managed to coax it to her with some food and she brought it into the house.

In the next couple of days we managed to get it to the vet, found out it was a female and that it was healthy except for having worms, which we got medication for.

So now we're at a loss for a name for it. So if anybody has any suggestions....

Oh, come now! That's obviously a Chinese cat. She was even telling you her name. Mei Yau. How could you name her anything else?

SheWhoMustBeObeyed read this just now, and suggested "Cherie"

    Why?

Remember the Warner Brothers cartoon character, Pepe Le Pew? He was always trying to love on the cat, and always called her, in French, of course, "Ma cherie!"

You know, I never, ever thought I'd get her to participate in a gun board....

    Looks like "Iggy" to me.

BTW, I just love kind people that care for and keep little helpless creatures.

    Good job.

    +1 On that, Big time!

Rescues often make the best pets.

On a Usenet board I read, there is a woman who has singlehandedly rescued 60 cats and kittens; mostly kittens. I shudder to think of the total she has spent in vet bills. And, she has found homes for all of them, herself. She has enough good kharma for the rest of her life, I think.

    How about Trance? Trancie

When she gets older, she will spend a lot of time in a trance.....

My kitty is just laying there in a trance right now....

Have fun with your new kitten. I hope you have many, many happy, healthy years with her. She's a real cutie.:hearts:

Thanks for all the input. Many good ideas there. We're still not sure what we're going to name her but we are leaning toward Sweet Pea or Jesse. We liked Mei Yau too. We still haven't made a final decision quite yet. We're trying to get a read on her personality.

We also have another cat named Mischief which we adopted from a shelter 2.5 years ago. She looks very similar to Mischief. Maybe we should come up w/ a name like Mayhem or Trouble for her. I sort of think that's a little cheesy though.

If you name her Mei Yau, you can always call her "Mei" for short. Just think of the fun you'll have when you take her to the vet or whatever and they ask you her name. You'll have to spell it for them, but it's fun.

Many years ago, when I was a kid, we got a little Pekingese. I wanted to name him "Spanky," and filled out the AKC form for that name. Since they wanted a second choice, I thought about it for a bit, and remembered Grandma Rose saying, "Fooey on you!" to the dog one day. So, I spelled it "Fui Yon Yu." And, yes, the AKC folks chose the Chinese name.
