I recently bought a new Seagate 500G external HD for backups.
It came with CMS Bounce-Back Express.

This is on a six month old Dell that I have never had any glitches with.

I made a successful full backup and a couple of successful incremental backups. The last time I ran it, it locked up with "Backing up The Registry. Please Wait" and never came back.

Nothing worked. I had to hit the switch on the power strip and was left with a computer that would not boot and a bad backup.
I had to restore to day one fresh out of the box condition.
Everything I've done for six months GONE. :steamed:

So, can someone recommend a good backup program for me?

    Thanks.

Actually, the backup in XP isn't terrible. And it's free.

If you have XP Pro Automated System Recovery works extremely well. It allows you to get back to where you left off, even on a new hard drive. Had to use it with my Mom's older PC twice now. If you don't keep it current, you wind up installing a LOT of patches once you get running, but it's not terrible.

XP Home doesn't have ASR, but I think (not sure, don't use Home) once you have XP reinstalled you can pretty much put it back how you found it pretty painlessly, so long as you back up system state along with your files.

I can tell you what I do and it might work for you.

Those data files I must have backups of, I copy to a flash drive every week. I don't back up programs as I have the original disks, cd's, dvd's. I make a folder with the backup date, copy those files to it, then copy that folder to the flash drive.

Once a month I copy My Documents to a dvd-rw. Worst case I am one month out.

Not a great system backup tool, but it's great for backing up folders and files in a flexible and fairly automated fashion.

I use this with Acronis True Image and it's a great solution.

I do have XP Pro but it is new to me. I will set up the ASR for next time.

    Thanks for the tip!

Does the Acronis allow multiple FULL backups?
The Bounce Back Express I used appeared not to. Every time I tried to make a new backup set with a new name and everything it still just added the last few files.
I want to choose between full and incremental.

I'm thinking I might have to partition the external HD to make multiple backup sets.

    Thanks for the replies guys!
