I went to K-mart last night and as I was leaving the store the cashier told me, "Thank you for shopping at Walmart!" Those guys own everything!

It took me ten years to discover why TYFSAK was printed on the cash drawers of the registers at K-Mart.

    I bet I've not been in a K-Mart in 20 years.

We have a K-Mart here in town.

I went in there a few years back to reflect on my youth as that was my favorite store to go in with my parents. Rarely did a trip not produce a Hot Wheels car or a Matchbox car to slip in my pocket to add to my collection.

Later in my early teens, it was the pocket knife display that drew me in.

But the experience was ruined by what I found once crossing through the doors. It looked like a cross between a poorly ran five and dime and some third world thrift mart. Nasty conditions, horrid shelving, and no rhyme or reason to merchandise display.

The junk that was there was horribly overpriced. I did find some video games that were in a clearance bin and bought one for my son. Haven't been back since.

Not sure what keeps them afloat. I do believe that Sears bought them out some time back so that may be what keeps the doors open.

Yeah, K-mart and Sears merged back in 2005, I believe. Now Kmart is a subsidiary of Sears Holdings Corporation.

I don't believe Walmart has any sort of interest in Kmart; and certainly not a controlling interest. Though I'm sure they both have similarly creepy cashiers.

Target is good, but I needed some cheap curtain rods and found them for half the price at wal mart. It's funny, most of the well off people I know shop at wal mart or costco for the necessities.

One common way to build your savings account balance is to not spend extra $ for the small stuff you need.

It can add up to significant amounts of extra money over a period of years.

I have know a few really wealthy people ($100 million +++) and they all were sort of tight about the basic everyday things.

Like would drive an extra 2 blocks to save $.02 a gallon on gas - would never stop at Starbucks and pay $5.00 for a cup of coffee - it was a point of pride / or being cheap was sort of a badge of honor. :dunno:

But then they did not mind spending the extra $ to own a private jet or have a full time maid.

I talked with a couple of them about it - they said it was about value - is it worth $x to get something - and not about the total amount.

So they would buy a $1.00 cup of coffee VS spending $5 because they did not think the extra $4 was worth it. But turn around and spend $10K on a private flight that Southwest would have done for $300.

Funny thing was - if I was buying they did not mind getting a latte at Starbucks -

I went into my local K-Mart and after the Sears buyout and found the same thing. I had never been into this particular one and my last K-Mart experience was in central Ohio (I now live in central FL).

I was looking for some kind of tape. Shipping tape, IIRC. I wondered all around the store. I found different kind of tapes in various departments scattered around the store. I eventually found what I was looking for after wandering around for far too long.

The K mart in Fairfax, Va is not too bad. It is not overrun by illegal aliens andthe prices are pretty good. The Walmart in Sterling is crowded and now has a ton of scum in it most of the time. The Target is not bad in the daytime during the week. I don't really like to shop.:crying:

I still think it's weird seeing Craftsman products at KMart
