UPDATE 5/5:

Currently at ~11,--- rounds. I can't stress enough, I have not cleaned nor lubricated the G44.

INTRO...

Alright, as some background, I bought my G44 back in January to use as a cheap trainer for my G19 Gen5. I wanted to really hone trigger discipline, grip, sight picture, and have a plinker to beat up. At the price of .22LR then, it was a strong idea in my opinion. As pistols were being received by people, some started to make complaints ranging from functional issues up to and including a blown extractor or cracked slide. I never truly disregarded I was buying a Gen1 variant but didn't care none the less, if anything happens, I'd address that at the time.

Anyway, back to the more benign complaints. Many made complaints the pistol would only function entirely clean or with 'x' brand this or that. I've seen mention some believe the chamber is out of SAAMI spec, the mag is improperly engineered, steel sights are NOT compatible and will cause damage to the slide, any extra weight from modded sights will cause slight actuation issues....am I forgetting anything else? For some, reading things like that on the forums is enough to stir the pot or cause concern. I for one, was obviously in a different mentality. I bought it to be a fun, easy, and cheap trainer. I guess I looked at the purchase as if I used monopoly money, if that makes sense?

Sorry, I digress. With all the hype of the forums I decided to do a little trial that has since proven to be mundane and truly shows Glock's known reliability from any other platform. My plan was to literally, pull the rig from the box, and use it. No cleaning, no lubricant, nothing....just shooting. I wasn't exactly sure how long that would last, since I often times do enjoy cleaning my toys over a few adult soda pops and Netflix. At first, I settled on a 1k rounds. That turned into 2k, which quickly escalated to 5k. After each benchmark, I'd take photos and observe how the wear and/or carbon accumulation would...accumulate. At a certain point, I was surprised, it sort of reached a plateau. A functional level of filth, so to speak.

Now, disclaimer #1. I do keep a record of the malfunctions I had over the course of using the G44. It is not to say, I was without stovepipes, failure to extracts, failure to feeds, and alike. It's just that.....those occurrences were often very rare or caused by poor quality ammunition. I'll post a document I had started on performance of various brands of ammunition but I later on put that information into another forum's thread after I'd come back from the range. I guess my point is, this thing does truly work just fine...that it isn't immune to problems caused by inconsistent quality ammunition. Even in lots that performed fine one day, it may not another day. .22LR is an inherently sporadic caliber as it is, in regard to being produced. But, we can save this discussion for a later point if you want?

Disclaimer, #2. I do run my guns hard and dirty. However, I take care of them (at intervals or when needed) and clean them up and/or maintain them. This G44 is the exception on the hypothetical experimental table and I'm fully aware of all the "this coulda, shoulda, woulda happen(ed)" naysayer statements. I'm taking on that liability, got it?! lol. Anyway, without further ado, photo time. As mentioned before, I'll try and throw up that initial document I generated. I'd also like to link to another popular website, where I documented function after that aforementioned document...if that's ok with admins?

MOD

Swapped stock polymer sights for Ameriglo Agent steel sights (the variant specifically for a G19 Gen5). Used a little lube due to the rear steel sights being installed in a polymer slide cut. Centered the rear. Used Loctite 242 on the front hex screw. Put a witness mark at each location to ensure neither drift. Need to assess polymer slide, as I continue to use the pistol, for cracks at the rear steel sights. Did not seem like unnecessary force was used to install.

If you have issues, try to be nice when you report them, or some people might have to cry themselves to sleep that night.

I am going to report on mine soon, but not dirty like yours I will follow proper procedures as recommended by Glock, see how that goes.

~950 rounds (& first day w/Ameriglo Agents)

I'll note I used CCI Mini-Mag 40gr CPRN earlier this day at the range and they were incredibly waxy. The gunk you see is just that and you'll see later on how said gunk actually clears out.

Failure to feed on 2/27, it happens, don't sweat it.

Bent round on 3/5

Dialing in some range time a few weeks back after reopening due to COVID...

~9500 rounds pt1

SQUIB load from a incredibly under powered CCI Blazer 38gr LRN. Was mortared free with a rod and continued to run. Emphasis on knowing how your gun feels and operates when using it, had I not felt the entirely different sensation from your typical weak round...that next trigger pull would have been interesting.

I definitely will. At this point, the biggest problem I've seen is what I believe is due to ammunition quality and it varies lot to lot. What was good weeks ago gives a few problems here or there now. And I get it, some of the filth could be contributing to that...but the essential parts still operate very well (ie: trigger, extractor, firing pin, etc). My mag release has gunked up a little however and requires more pressure to drop a mag. That and the mag well is pretty filthy but empties still drop loose. Here's what I've noticed in terms of the ammunition stuff above, though...
  • FTEs, stovepipes, etc due to under powered rounds
  • x1 round caused a squib, made a pop noise like the 'snap pops' during the 4th of July
  • Winchester .22LR HV 36gr HPCP, as of right now, is the only round that loads into the mags differently. I think it's a spec issue with the cases, often times the first round doesn't present appropriately. I also noticed the rounds stack with a weird offset through the mag window. Could be a lot issue but I haven't grabbed more to test. No other brand has caused the now classic "nosedive' or 'full periscope' style issue.
If I think of anything else, I'll update. And right? I don't want to offend anyone from my despicable looking G44. Viewer discretion is advised, all!

I probably would not have done what you did for fear of an out of battery case failure and damaging the slide/ejector.

An interesting post with all your documentation. Thanks!

I hear you, there definitely is an inherent risk. Every round has fully chambered however. There is a design element in place to prevent the firing pin from striking the round if the slide is not fully seated however. It's interesting the very select few (2 people?) that had an issue with the out of battery & ejector issue...never replied back to elaborate on the aftermath. I'd like to hear and see more information but am guessing it is solely ammunition quality related.

Wow what an informative post. I dont have half the round count through my G44 as yours. Maybe 600 rounds but mine has run fine. I noticed today at the range that the trigger had smoothed up and really improved. Glock has a winner with the G44

Great post.
Mines got 1,100 founds thru it. Last weekend I shot 110 rounds through it with 0 failures. First time its functioned 100% in 1 outing. Trigger has for sure smoothed up better. Yours must be very smooth by now.

Thanks for sharing and documenting, and an interesting read! You have demonstrated your G44 has done quite well! I appreciate you taking the time to post!

I am not sure why, but I have a sudden urge to clean a gun...
