Even after getting onto him for many months, my dog likes to nip at me. Iecan understand his herding instincts when he nips at my hells and calves [which actually tickles--he just kinda "mouths" them]. But, whenever we start playing, or if I pet him vigorously, he has a tendency to bite my hands--even after I have scolded him for it. He finally stopped biting my wife after she started wimpering like a hurt puppy everytime he did it--took about two weeks. When I tried that, he took it as a game, or as "come in for the kill now.":freak:

Any suggestions on how to stop his biting? He is about 9.5 months old now, and 80 lbs.

keep it there for a while he won't want it there.

Do this every time he bites.

I cured a friends pit bull of the habit in a few minutes.

They dot apprecite having their tongues grabbed.
This works well.
But if the niipping is just playful and not agressive then I wouldnt worry too much about it.

You need to assert your dominance as the "leader of the pack".

Your pup should never nip you after you tell him the game is over.

It's easier when the "puppy" doesn't weigh 80 lbs but if you are physically able, try picking the dog up off the ground. Keep all four feet up and hold him until he settles down.
Make sure he knows it is not a game.
If he still won't submit, wrap a hand around his throat.
Don't use much pressure at all, no need to hurt him.
This seems to impress upon Poochy just who is the boss.

It's worked on my dogs in the past.

I've done that many a time, too. He wriggles, and eventually settles down. Then, when I put him back down, he starts playing again, nipping my calves.

It isn't really hard nipping, usually--but he does this a lot to me. Once in a while, he gets carried away and bites hard, but never enough to break the skin or anything like that.

Except the time I decided to smack his snout with my other hand still in it--that hurt--ME!:freak:

The most effective 'stopper' is vocal, not physical.

When you need the dog to stop misbehaving, say "OUGHT!!" in a loud, snappish tone.

That will get his attention and is to be used sparingly--don't get him too used to it.

For whatever reason, this will stop 99% of the doggy BS instantly. I believe it tells them they screwed up in their own language, and this is the only way I managed to train my cattle dog as well as I did.

Try it along with LT's advice. And give an OUGHT when he starts in again.

Sounds like SOMEONE needs to learn how to do a 'Long Down/Stay' to me...

I use a similar technique with our GSD's, but use ehhh insted. They get 2 "ehhh's" before a no. Negative physical corrections come with a "no" (grab skin on the back of the neck and twist}.

After a few drills, they learn going past "ehhh" is not good. Use whatever word you want, but be consistant, and I never use no without a negative physical correvtion, and the "ehhh"'s get the job done.

I have never struck an animal and would not recommend doing so, FWIW. Be the leader of the pack, and assert your dominance as a pack member would.

I do a lot of playful rough housing with the dogs, and always end the session with a "be friends" command and showing them two open palms, then pet them. This lets them know play time is over, and it is time to stop the friendly play biting.

Every pup I've had seems to want to bite, I think its natural for all dogs! I have used this technique on all my dogs. Simply take their lip, the part on the side of their mouth. Fold it over their teeth, and assert pressure with your thumb, just enough so they feel their teeth on their lip. Then in a command voice say no bite! Apply more pressure as neccessary until they stop, without raising the level of your voice. Even press to the point of getting a yelp if deemed necessary. Your dog will get the point, litterally!

As far as setting your dogs place in the pack, I also learned this years ago. In the pack scenario, which dog eats first? If you guessed the dominant, or alpha, you'd be correct. Simply spit a few times in your dogs food before giving it to him. If you have multiple members in your family have all do so before the bowl is placed on the floor. This will tell your dog that every family has eaten on his food before he is allowed to eat.

Please don't hit your dog. I know it's hard not to but nothing makes you feel worse than having your pet cower everytime you raise your hand. Could you imagine your wife or child crawling up in the fetal position everytime you got mad because they were afraid of you. I tell you from experience, resist the urge to "spank". Instead, I have found using verbal techniques such as a stern "uh-eh" very effective. If that doesn't work, try putting some pennies or similar noise making item in a plastic 1 liter bottle. Shake it vigorously when he misbehaves.

So when my dog cowers with its tail between its legs everytime it hears a noise similar to that how am I supposed to feel?

Spanking is different then beating. I only spanked my dog one time and thats when she pissed on my fiance's down comforter because I wouldn't play with her. Believe me she never did that again. My dog is quite playful but she knows I'm the boss.

My dog cowers whenever it hears load noises just because she is a little wimp. It was funny...we took her for a walk and a car started she took off running!! Poor thing.

If I say "no" in stern enough voice she will do what is needed. Sometimes she gets upset because she knows she did something wrong.

Everybody has different methods and I believe that as long as the animal is not being neglected or beaten it will be ok.

People, don't hit your dog, never, ever, in any case, but self defense. It's illegal and immoral.
That's not how dogs learn, you can rule a dog with fear, or you can be an Alpha and rule a dog out of respect.

There have been many a good suggestions here, but nobody has addressed the problem. Don't rough house with the dog PERIOD, EVER It is a game you cannot win and the dog cannot lose. If you want to play with the dog (which I highly encourage), throw a ball, play tug of war, but don't get physical.

Dogs in the wild don't swipe at each other, they pin them to the ground by their neck and there is no mistaking the message sent by it.

Your dog is wimp now because of one smack, you taught it, it can't trust you, so now the dog is weary of everything.

Check with your neighborhood professional on this and you will see I speak the truth.

Might not be the best way to train a dog, but illegal? I'd have to say "spanking" a dog would be a far cry from animal abuse. Immoral? Again, animal abuse, yes, spanking a dog, no. I'm also of the camp that a dog is a dog and that there are times when a dog does need phyical correction which might end up being a light tap, depending on the situation. Not that I have any special insight, good luck with your problem.
