Well, this is what went on for the 2002 Michigan “opening” weekend of gun deer season!

I had a busy one & it was great.

There was a lot of “1st times” this year.

I’ll start out with the deer I’m most proud of thus far…

In the attached picture you’ll find my older brother’s 1st deer ever. Not too bad, eh? It’s an 8-point & goes right around 185 pounds “dressed out”! He took this one out of my tree stand with his shotgun, which I “zeroed” in for him a few weeks back. I couldn’t be happier for the big guy!

P.S. I bet you guys can’t guess which one I am! There’s a definite clue in this picture!;)

Here’s my doe taken “opening” morning at 64 yards with my scoped Beretta 390.

This was my 1st deer ever taken on “opening day” & from an “elevated position”. (Tri-Pod)

It’s actually a pretty good-sized doe. I couldn’t even guess the weight, but she was an adult 1-1/2 year old deer.

In this next attached picture you’ll find my brother-in-law’s 1st deer ever. It’s a nice little 6-point.

He took this one just after waking up from a little nap in the woods. It almost stepped on him!:)

This last picture is of my 1st 7-pointer, which I’d taken with my bow a few weeks earlier.

I finally got back a picture of it & thought I’d share!

Great job and nice looking animals. Did you hang out in a swamp or what type of surroundings were there?

    Regards,
    Glen

45acp4me, all these deer were taken on farm land in the Mid-Michigan area. (Saginaw County)

I took my doe out of a field, but the other 2 bucks were taken in mature (open) woods.

Quite the variety of land you guys were on. Were there alot of other hunters around stirring them up or was it pretty calm?

    Regards,
    Glen

It's all private land where I'm at. It was pretty darn quiet this year. My doe was the only spooked deer anyone or I had seen all weekend... the other deer seemed not to know that they were being hunted yet.

This was my first time out deer hunting ever and had a blast. We were on state land in Jackson county, but there were very few hunters on it. The friend I went with has been hunting the same place for seven years and said he's never seen that few people. There was only one other shot fired on the state game area we hunted. He got two of the three deer shot there that day. :)

    Cheers!
    Glen

I was out on opening day in Lapeer county. I heard a Buck or two grunting about I did not see anything. I Did not here as many shots that as I have in the past. And my dad has not seen any hunters either, He is living on our land. I am going up again tonight for 4 days. Wish me luck.

"I was out on opening day in Lapeer county."

Hey, I used to live in Lapeer! Some pretty big bucks have been taken out that way.

"I heard a Buck or two grunting about I did not see anything."

Why didn't you just shoot at the grunting sounds? I believe they call that "sound shooting" & I hear it's perfectly safe... ;f

"I Did not here as many shots that as I have in the past. And my dad has not seen any hunters either, He is living on our land."

The DNR has been complaining of the dwindling hunter participation for more then a few years now. It's one of the reasons you're starting to see all these newer & new "special hunts"...

    "Wish me luck."

    Good luck sir!

I figured you guys would get a kick out of that one! I didn't even notice my G19 in these pictures till I scanned them for GT. I never leave home without it.

During hunting season, it's called my "Adam Hill Gun".

Check out this big guy a good friend of mine took down by the Michigan/Ohio boarder!

    It's an 8-point.

    Good shots! :)

Except for the one taken with bow & arrow, were all the others taken with shotgun slugs? What gauge? Foster? Benneke? other?

    Fox, I took my deer with a 12-gauge shotgun using Federal’s 3” Barn’s Expander sabots. My brother used a 12-gauge shotgun using Federal’s 2-3/4” Hydra-Shok sabots. My brother-in-law used a 20-gauge shotgun using a Benneke 3” Foster style slug.

Well I did not get a deer this year. I went further back in the woods after the first day just to kinda look around. I really did not see as many tracks or droppings. I still have an anterless tag to fill I might go up for day in December for one of the late hunts. But it was still nice to get away.
