That's true. IP's can be spoofed but their is always a trace on location.

IPs are overstated as a way of tracing people.

They'll get you very close. IP Spoofing could be used but even then its only slightly more difficult.

Getting the IP address is easy.. getting the court order for the ISP to reveal your real address is something else... but it's been done..

That's why security is so important in your wireless setup.. you don't want a bunch of kids using your IP address and the MAC address of your cable modem to bittorrent movies and music.. bringing the MPAA and RIAA down on you...

Bit-torrents are so decentralized it is nearly impossible to track them that is why they are so popular with bootleggers.

It's not for us to ask anyone's location. It's for Eric and he doesn't require it.

they might get someone working for a LE agency or the ISP close. they wont get you, the private citizen, close.

yes, as far as states go, you can get to it using only the IP.

Nothing wrong with at least having your state down, or county if out of USA. Some threads go back and forth until someone finally tells where they are from, and then the posts make sense.

    +1

Gun laws change from state to state as we all know, and knowing what state a person is from is a big help. Also for the paranoid out there, knowing that your from (enter your state here) is of little value to anyone, and I'm sure somewhere in your history of posts you have mentioned it.

You are abosutely correct. I have met very few people that haven't heard the Show Me State as referring to the state of Missouri in the U.S.A..

If someone feels better about not advertising his location I also do not see the issue with that.

If a potential business deal is in the works, is that not what e-mail and PM's are for.

In my opinion it is childish, and immoral as well as unethical to post or attempt to post another individuals personal info on a public discussion forum in an attempt to display some sort of perceived superiority.
