I still don't quite understand the fatwa or even why it is a thing. I took a terrorism class so, of course, we spent a great deal of time talking about terrorism from Muslim extremists.

But, to my understanding there are many people out there who can issue fatwas, holy leaders. Bin Ladin could not issue them, so he had someone issue them for him.

Which is why I don't understand their significance at all. Someone can issue a fatwa promoting terrorism to go in accordance with an exploited view of jihad and neglecting other rules like harmoneous living with people of the book, and likewise someone can issue a fatwa condemning terrorism.

Seems goofy to me. I've had a couple religion courses and the terrorism course I mentioned, but I still don't fully understand the fatwa.

He has done what those who believe that terrorism is not the right way fears to do. He's made a stand and he's called out all the idiots that use terrorism to hide their ideological beliefs, not their religious beliefs.

He also is most likely aware of what will happen to him, and it will. He will be made an "example of", to ward off all those who believe as he does, but are simply too afraid of what can/will happen to them if they give voice to their beliefs. There are many who feel the same way but not very many courageous enough to say it.

I thank him for his courage and wish him luck, he'll need it.

Wow, that man must clank when he walks. Good for him and, like carrys said, good luck to him.

A fatwa is just the same as any other religious leader's opinion on the religion's tome of choice. Much of the "power" behind a fatwa comes from the person who issued it.

For instance, if a Cathilic priest issued a ruling to his clergy about his idea of the proper meaning of a religious ideology held ony to Catholicism it would have slightly less weight than if the Pope did it.

All religions have "elders" that the followers turn to for clarification of complex concepts. The fatwa is just the mechanism Islam uses.

At least that's my understanding of it.
