My wife's very old HP 952c printer died yesterday. It started making some grinding noises and then a little plastic gear popped out the paper eject slot. Kind of cool actually. Never seen anything like it.

I stopped by Staples and they have a good sale going on. I picked up an HP f4480 multifunction for $59.98.

What a cool little box. It's not a photo printer but it does images very nicely and text just fine. Speed is more than acceptable and it's very quiet. Ink is less expensive than many other models.

On my desktop I have a scanner and printer and my wife is often asking me to make copies and she just refuses to learn how to do it herself. So I stop whatever I'm doing and scan the whatever, save the file and print it out. The f4480 has a one button copy mode. Don't even have to turn the computer on. Put the original on the scanner and press 'Copy'. Even my technology challenged wife can do it.

My wife runs Ubuntu 8.04 LT because she hates change, that's why the 8.04LT, and the version of HPLIP on her system doesn't support this printer. But, go here if you are running Linux:

    Could not be easier.

If you are looking for a nice multifunction give it a look.
Newegg sells it for the same price but no sales tax. But I needed it right now.
