http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/2010/jan/06/memphis-police-recruit-charged-after-making-sex-ta/ Not sure if the MPD acted stupidly or not, but: A Memphis police recruit's penchant for homemade porn led to criminal charges after he videotaped an unknowing, underage victim, the police department said Wednesday. Gregory Marshall, 26, was fired this week following an investigation that began Monday when a supervisor at the academy got a complaint about Marshall's X-rated activities. "It was open-and-shut," said Memphis police spokeswoman Karen Rudolph. The Sex Crimes Bureau "did a great job, and it led not only to a criminal charge, but he was also terminated from his job." According to a police affidavit, Marshall tried to get a 17-year-old girl to make a sex tape with him as early as January 2009, but she refused. She told police Marshall showed her several videos he'd made of himself having sex with other females. Marshall and the girl had sex several times at his home in 2009, according to the affidavit, and he recorded video without her consent. During a search of Marshall's home, officers found several tapes, including one in which Marshall appeared with the victim. Marshall gave a written statement to investigators that he'd had sex with her three times, in January, August and December, twice when she was only 17. He entered the police academy in October. The investigation is continuing, said Rudolph, who added that she didn't know if any of the other tapes were made without permission. Marshall is charged with exploitation of a minor by electronic means, statutory rape and photographing an individual without consent. "As with any profession ... there will always be those individuals who choose the wrong path," police Director Larry Godwin said in a written statement. "This recruit successfully passed through the same ... process that the Human Resources Division conducts for all applicants," he said. "There was evidently nothing in this individual's background that raised any red flags." Marshall was being held late Wednesday in the Shelby County Jail.
