How does one add HTTP email accounts like hotmail to Thunderbird. Had no problems back in the day adding it to outlook express, can't figure it out in T-bird.

Don't think it can be done.

And I wouldn't want to download any email from hotmail onto my home PC.

You have an ISP, use thier email accounts to forward to your desktop.

Most ISP's allow multiple email accounts anyway.

Here is what I found on the Thunderbid FAQ's (hmm, Hint, Hint)

Can I access my Netscape WebMail or Hotmail accounts through Thunderbird?
No. Netscape WebMail and Hotmail use proprietary protocols. To access WebMail directly through an e-mail client requires you to use Netscape 6+ with AIM; to do so with Hotmail requires either Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express. There are also freeware applications available that will let you do the same thing, such as Hotmail Popper.

Hotmail Popper is a pain, not because it's hard to use, but because if you're going to use another program to access Hotmail, it might as well be your browser.

Thunderbird is well worth losing the ability to easily check Hotmail.

Built in easy to use spam controls (precluding the need for another program running), lack of Outlook and OE's built in vulnerability to viruses (HUGE advantage), options to enhance functions with extensions (instead of being stuck with what the programmers wanted), built in spellchecker (OE requires Office's spellchecker).

Additionally, Thunderbird can do everything OE can do, except check Hotmail.

And besides, why would you want a Hotmail account anyway. Haven for spammers, both senders and receivers...

    ok, I'm ressurecting this thread.

I'm going to switch to thunderbird, and ditch hotmail after many years.

I need to find a replacement email client that I can get thru thunderbird, something that I can use when signing up for stuff, that doesn't have my name in it.

Can thunderbird access other popmail services?

I have an adelphia address that's my main one, should I just get another one of those? If I did could someone use that address to track down my main address that has my name in it?

I feel silly asking this, I did email support for years, but I have no experience with thunderbird......

    thanks

Why not just use your main one? Spam isn't an issue with Thunderbird. When you start changing you email address the spam will start trickling in, so you just start marking it spam as it happens. by the time it really starts pouring in you've already got Thunderbird trained to spot it and it becomes a non-issue.

Otherwise, just get another address from your ISP.

I am lucky enough to have an email address that was from a job I had over 4 years ago. The admins forgot to delete the account when I left so that is where all of my spam goes. They are nice enough to have a spam filter on it for me too. I get one email every couple of days telling me they caught more spam. I go and delete it so the box doesn't get too full and draw too much attention.
