I am looking into a shotgun(on a budget) and am wondering if anyone owns or has fired a mossberg maverick 88 security model. theres one for 199 at my local gun store. Ill probably fire about 200 rnds a year and its only for home defense. is it worth spending more?

I didn't didn't spend much more on my Mossberg 500 about 30 yrs ago..... give or take a little.

When you say "security" model what do you mean?

That's not a bad price if it has the magazine extension and shorter barrel on it. I have a Maverick that I have put buckshot, slugs, and plenty of bird shot through without any problems. I stuck an 18.5 inch Mossberg barrel on it and use it for HD. The Maverick isn't an heirloom but it is a great value for a utility/HD gun that you don't cry over when it gets scratched.

Had one for over 12 years and it has worked every single time. In fact, i carried it as a patrol shotgun for a while.

The difference between the 500 and the 88 is basically where certain parts are made (Mexico) and where the safety is. And it's not ready for a mount if you wanted to stick something on top of it.

Other than that...the parts are interchangeable.

As Gonetothedarkside said...it's a great value.

I bought a Maverick 88 about four years ago, and i have used and abused it since, and have never had a single issue with it. I would buy one again for sure.

    :dunno:

IIRC it has a 2 year warranty - not sure what the warranty is on a Maverick - but hard to see anyone wearing out a pump - even if you shoot 100 rounds a week it will last for years.

But the Maverick is not a bad choice - just giving the OP a few options -
I like the 870 better than Mossberg the Pardner is an 870 clone.

you misunderstand, aftermarket has nothing to do with warranty. Aftermaket refers to other companies that make accessories for the product.

Accessories for a Remington 870 will also fit the Pardner -

The exception is the barrel -

I think it is sort of dumb to buy a $200 shotgun then dump $$$ into a bunch of add on crap anyway -

Again nothing wrong with a Maverick - fine choice - give him years of service.

Love my Maverick 88, thousands of rounds without a single issue. Currently resides under the back seat of my work truck with a nice selection of slugs, buck, and birdshot. Has a cheap red dot sight on it.
