Any 88 is going to deliver far beyond its price point. Actually after owning nearly any pump available on the market, I settled down on Maverick. Even though I also own Winchester 97 :)

I have a 590A1, with all the bells and whistles, which stands in a gun safe. I have an 88, just like yours but all black, that stands loaded in a corner of my bedroom. Yeah...I prefer the 88.

How does the FDE plastic look against the black metal? Some companies go lighter and others darker.

As much as I like the higher end autos (Benelli, etc), the Maverick is a fine shotgun for its purpose.

Hello! Just bought a Mav Sec 88 in black trim. I like the FDE look, but have another Moss 500 with accessories. The Mav 88 will stay 100% stock(except for a sling). Both 12ga. Can't wait to take it to the local outdoor range, and run some rounds thru it!
Mine was $210 + tax from a LGS. Solid gun, should fly well with its Mossberg partner! Outstanding Home Defense Choice!

It looks great. I honestly love the look. Now I wish my Glock's were FDE. Ha!

Got to stick with my 97 clone. Short arms, got to cut the stock and put a Pachmyr Sporting Clay pad (doesn't stick to clothing like so many generic butt pads) on my pump gun, and I'd go with the 18.5" barrel. Don't understand the comments on "fde looks good with the black". Are you matching it with your yoga pants? What ever happened to brown wood. Goes with everything.

You can't put wood on 88 without replacing the whole forend assembly. So wood is not an option for most. On a side note...97 clone? Really? Does it hurt to buy American? See how it works when one is trying to spoil other's post instead of bringing something positive in? Yeah. Exactly like that.

Yeah. One needs to replace the whole forend assembly. Just to repeat myself. Not many owners will do that, because there is nothing wrong with the existing set up. In fact some of the Mossberg 500 shotguns are coming with the pinned forend those days. No functional difference between the two.

    Good buy.

    I’ve given up on Remington.

A little polishing on the internals will make that Mav 88 run slicker than snot.

Put that 88 on a pattern board with some #8 field loads when you get a chance, Shadowlands. Some years back I got a basic, stocked 88 action in a trade. The previous owner was military and the AF moving contractor had lost the box with his barrel, so I got it dirt cheap.

I unscrewed the mag tube and ordered the Mossberg 500 equivalent of what came on your FDE 88. When I got it assembled, I poked it full of Universal #8 for a test run. I soon learned that 'cylinder' barrel was throwing 30 yard patterns about halfway between Improved and Modified. Even made a two-shot plug and killed a few doves with it, Maybe just a fluke, but that shotgun might pattern better than you'd expect.

I have a 590 (590A1 minus aluminum FCG housing and safety), and it’s a heavy beast, way over built for civilian use.

The 88 is light and easier to handle. I can see why you prefer the 88.
