The title says it all.

I bought it used and it was heavily used but still usuable. This weekend I went hunting and on three ocassions the spent shell refused to extract and it would get a double feed.

I would fix it by cycling the gun hard but had a few missed shots because I was messing around with it.

I think it is just a worn extractor. But I want to know what you guys think and if it is, can I fix it myself?

Thank you.

If you haven't done so already, clean it thoroughly. Too often hunting shotguns get ridden hard and put away wet. That works for a while, but eventually ....

+1 detail strip and clean. It's easy to do and there are.videos on YouTube showing how.

If it is a worn extractor they are easy to swap out.

You have a dirty chamber. Every high mileage pump will do this eventually. I take a dowel with one end in a drill, and the other end with an appropriate size cleaning rag wrapped around it. Soak it in solvent, and insert the cleaning rag in to the chamber and let the drill do the work. Do this until no more crud. It's worked for me every time.

Either you have a dirty chamber, a dirty extractor, a worn extractor, or a bad ejector. First thing to do is to CLEAN THE SNOT OUT OF IT. By that I mean detail strip the whole friggin receiver.

Mostly Winchester 2 3/4'', steel shot. My chamber says its for 2 3/4'' and 3''.
That ammo always worked fine in mine. I did have issues like you describe with Federal bulk I got at walmart with silver coloured rims.

my shotgun is a mossberg 535 and a buddy has an 870. we both have had the opposite issue. winchester is very difficult to get to extract every 10th round or so but federal has been flawless in thousands of rounds. we were shooting 100 round bulk packs on skeet and trap.

I had three Mossbergs and two of them did not work.

There are two extractor claws. Sounds like left one is not gripping right. On the left side part that pushes the spent shell out is actually cutting away at pin that holds left extractor. The more you use it the more it wears it out. It looked like self destructing design when I looked at it.
