"This Man's War" by Andrew Exum. Got out as a Ranger captain on medical (messed up knee noncombat after Afghanistan). Covers time in Kuwait, Ranger school, how he got into the Army, and operation anaconda. Pretty good read for a short book. Most libraries have it now too.

If you like techy analyses of modern war, read the books by Anthony Cordesman. He has a series which is really interesting. Not blood and guts but theory, strategy and tactics of major modern conflicts like the Iran-Iraq war, Gulf I and II, Falklands, etc.

"Generation Kill" is pretty good. It really deals just with a grunt-level view of the way, though there are occassional talks with higher-up commanders. Lots of good vinettes about Marines being Marines.
