what are the limits, smaller to larger.
do the limits vary from state to state? (I live in KY)
Here in TX you're good to go, as long as it ain't rimfire.
It varies by state.
Here in VA for big game hunting (deer and bear) it must be .23 cal or larger. No mention that it even has to be centerfire so if someone developed a .23 rimfire you could big game hunt with it.
where can find this info? i've looked, but i can't find it.
Same in Montana.
Same in florida for deer-only.
You can shoot hogs and such with rimfires. My typical idea caliber is any centerfire that shoots a 100gr plus projectile for deer/hog. IMHO that's the bottom of the line.get enough gun that you can reliably shoot and shoot good.
Your state game department, or department of natural resources should have it listed. Also any state I've bought a hunting license for had a stack of little booklets with the hunting regs on the counter of the store that sold the licenses.
Since you live in Kentucky the Kentucky department of Fish and Wildlife would be a good place to start. Sounds like you also need a hunter safety course.
GA is a little squirrely.
Larger than 22 for deer must be centerfire. No mag restrictions for rifles+ shottys 5 or fewer rounds.
Anything for hogs unless it is on a WMA outside of deer season and then it must be a 22 rimfire (or smaller) or shotty with 2 shot or smaller.
Fur bearers - about the same as WMA rules for hogs. Which kinda sucks since I could have got a beautiful bobcat earlier this year with my 06.
Coyotes - any legal hunting firearms for large game or fur bearers.
Check your states' dnr website for your specific regulations.
I lived in East Texas for a few years and learned that more Deer are taken with a 22mag and a spot light than with any other caliber...place was full of poachers....
Sounds like central Ga, I cant believe how proud some of those poachers are of their bucks they shot at nite with their dog "spot."
