This might be a good time to buy some of those $1 houses that are available in Michigan.

Detroit businesswoman Denise Ilitch may still be deciding whether she wants to run for governor, but a new poll suggests that Democrats think it's a good idea.

Meanwhile, the poll -- conducted by EPIC-MRA of Lansing and released to the Free Press and WXYZ-TV (Channel 7) -- shows Attorney General Mike Cox opening up a 7 percentage point lead on U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra of Holland in the race for the Republican nomination.

In head-to-head matchups, both Cox and Hoekstra defeat Ilitch, Cox by a substantial margin. The two Republicans have even bigger margins against other Democrats.

The poll comes after Lt. Gov. John Cherry's withdrawal from the Democratic race earlier this month. Cherry had led Democrats, but also fared poorly against Republicans in polls and was having trouble raising money.

The poll also showed that slightly more Michiganders think that Republicans can solve the state's biggest problems and, for the first time in years, slightly more identify themselves as Republicans, said Bernie Porn, who conducted the poll.

Ilitch gets 23% among likely Democratic voters, Speaker of the House Andy Dillon gets 8% and Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero has 5%, according to the poll.

Cox leads the Republicans with 32%, closely followed by Hoekstra with 25% and Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard with 16%. In EPIC's poll last October, Hoekstra led Cox by a single point.

"All the Democrats are getting creamed in the general election," said Porn, who conducted the poll of 600 statewide residents from Sunday through Tuesday. "And on most issues, people are trusting Republicans over the Democrats to address the problems facing the state."

Most of the Republican candidates for governor have better name recognition than their Democratic counterparts, too.

A large majority of poll respondents said President Barack Obama and Gov. Jennifer Granholm are doing either a fair or poor job.

The telephone poll of 600 respondents for overall questions and 400 each for party primary voting has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Cox has the best name recognition of all the candidates, followed by Bouchard, Hoekstra and Ilitch.

"She has surprisingly high name recognition because of the Ilitch name," Porn said.

She is the daughter of pizza and sports team titan Mike Ilitch, who owns the Detroit Tigers baseball team and Red Wings hockey team.

"But nobody has spent a dime on advertising, so there's plenty of time to get your name out there," he said.

By far, improving the state's economy and creating jobs is the concern of Michiganders, attracting 49% as the top issue, followed by improving education funding, which was the only other issue getting double digits with 12%.

Republicans are better suited to fix the economy, according to 36% of the people in the poll, while 30% thought Democrats were the ones best equipped to fix the problems.

    Michigan might turn to Republicans:wow:

right........and monkeys may fly out butt!

Figure it about the same chance for either thing to happen. But, then again, if I were asked 1 month ago if there would be a Republican Senator from Massachusetts, there'd be some stinky monkeys flying around and I'd have a hard time sitting down! The unions and "inner-city" voters can only vote Democrat, so I doubt we'll see Mighigan turn to the right. I'd enjoy being wrong in my prediction.

    Fullclip,

Before the current administration, the state was pretty much in republican hands most of the time. Not only the Gov but the house and senate as well. They ran the state into heavy debt. Current Dems ran the state further in debt and the current Gov will be out due to term limits. It is very likely that Michigan will swing back to the Republicans. I am not sure what good that will do unless the auto companies start to really come back strong. We are pretty much a one industry state. (Ford showed a profit last year).

Mike Cox is the current state Attorney General and is very pro 2nd amendment. As the article stated he is the front runner.

I hope not. I just bought the Silverdome on Ebay for $442. I was planning to offer all the states that can't pay to house their prisoners my facility with a knife on every seat. Cameras would be set up on the roof for pay per view access. I was going to hire Blackwater (or Xa as I believe their new name is) as machinegunners at the exits. There goes that idea.

IMHO the Republican party should make a public apology to America, gracefully disband and make room for someone else to defeat the Democrats. I do not believe that the GOP can rise above petty politics and lead the country in times when the stakes are this high.

My nose hurts from holding it in the voting booth every election after Reagan.

We can only hope! With all the union workers that have losts their jobs recently, you would think they might pull their heads out of the sand. Maybe not...either way Detoilet is a lost cause, and with all the parasites moving to the suburbs, they are not far behind:crying:

I'd point my finger at Coleman Young, friend of Jimmy Carter. (A president named "Jimmy"?)
