Its talk like this that ends you up in Afghanistan.

Recruiter: "I see you dont have the qualifications to be a pilot, but that's ok! See, if you sign up for infantry you'll be able to lat move to pilot after awhile. Happens all the time, trust me."

You're obviously much more in the loop than I am, but I'm pretty clear that she was competing for one of a limited number of Pilot slots against her peers at TBS, while my other student is indeed on an Aviation contract from the beginning as you describe. Don't know if it matters that both are ROTC.

I think it was called 'Competitive Air Contract', but it's possible I've misremembered.

Again, you certainly know a million times more about this than I do, but she has pics up of getting her Flight Student assignment on MOS assignment day, and describes it as a competitive endeavor.

It's of course possible I've somehow misunderstood, or gotten the details wrong, but I've spoken with both students about it, and the guy with the guaranteed Air contract specifically mentioned that she was pursuing the pilot slot through a different pathway than he was.

It very well could have been for which aircraft she was wanting to go for. Officers join up on an aviation contract, but don't get to pick their specific plane/helicopter. Their class ranking determines which aircraft they ultimately end up in for the most part. I was an enlisted recruiter but dealt with the officer side a lot, so they could have some programs I was unaware of or something new since I left the Marines. I do know that ROTC is incredibly incredibly competitive. To get one of those scholarships is a huge deal in itself.

Didn't know spelling was that important in the cockpit.
    What about penmanship?

My impression is they don't really need to go this route to find pilots but with all the airlines laying off people, the Marines think they might be able to cherry pick a few people who recently left service and are now unemployed.

From the ones that I have known the mindset of a USMC pilot and a USAF pilot are worlds apart. AF is "wild blue wonder" and Corps is "close air support".

I have read it was around 2 million to train a pilot from walking in the front door to flying his assigned jet.

A few months back, it was revealed that the Marines were ditching all their fixed-wing aircraft, tanks and APCs (IIRC). They were going straight infantry and helos. There was a thread here about this months back. People here thought it was about getting ready to fight the Chinese on some islands in the South China Sea.

So, did the Marines ditch all their fixed-wing pilots, and then change their mind?

Of course. After all, what harm could it do if the pilot can't tell the difference between "off" and "on" and "fire" and .............?

With all the social unrest which could easily get out of control depending on how the election goes. I think we could be seen as vulnerable by our adversaries.

If Portland style riots ramp up a few hundred percent we might see China take Taiwan or possibly worse. This might be why the Marines are taking this step.

Yeah, I'm just not clear enough on the details to offer more info, sorry - she'll be assigned an aircraft around the end of the year, and then type-specific training, and the guy graduates in the spring and is off to TBS and then the pilot pipeline.

I'd rather see some A-1 Skyraiders drop some napalm on them. They like fire, right?

Well it could be they are anticipating some future sh** hitting the fan and want to be more than ready. I don't think they are doing it just to be nice to a bunch of old flyboys. I do think a lot will go for that offer. OOORAH. SEMPER-FIDELIS
