I have been a long time watcher of both shows. I realize that Survivor Man (Les Stroud) is filming his own stuff but it seems like all he does is starve himself for a week. Now Bear Grylls does a much better job but he also has a camera crew and some of his stuff if staged. It seem to me that Bear Grylls does a better job of actually teaching survival strategies like making shelter, fire, finding food, purifying water, and navigating. What do you guys think?

Les shows how it really is. Bear shows the hollywood version.

Les Stroud is kind of lame to me....I don't see him giving himself a dirty-water enema or squeezing drinking water from the grass inside a dead camels stomach.

Bear Grylls is ridiculous. A lot of the stuff he does is a very bad idea. And a lot of the stuff he does is flat out fake.

I like them both, but I like Les Stroud a little better, he seems to show survival techniques that anyone could use, Bear shows techniques that a Navy Seal would use.

In a TRUE survival situation, you wouldn't be running full-speed down the side of mountain - or doing half the stuff Bear Grylls does.

I think Survivorman is FAR more realistic and informative. Plus I enjoy the fact that Les films it all himself, always has a harmonica with him, and even composed the theme music.

The only episode of Man Vs. Wild I have ever really watched - and enjoyed - was the time he partnered up with Will Ferrel. That was truly entertaining.

I'm a Survivorman guy for sure.

That's because being stranded and trying to survive (in real life, not Hollywood) is not fun, or exciting.

    Neither.

I think Ray Mears is the only one who has any real skills.

Bear Grylls is Hollywood's version of a survival "expert." The high risk, attention grabbing stunts he pulls would get someone killed in real life, without the immediately available camera crew and medical support (not to mention the hotel room he sleeps in at night). The crew also provides him with some of the animals he eats.

    This.

What that guy shows is an example of what not to do in a survival situation.

This may come as a shock to the "survivor" generation, but not everything in the world is a gameshow. I just assume that a show like man vs. wild or survivorman is intended to stage scenarios and show you how to survive. Why on earth would he not use a crew and stage things? Then again, I think anybody who'd watch "survivor" is a f'n' retard, so maybe some people see it differently.

Besides, Les Stroud reminds me of the kind of college sissies who go hiking in $1,000 worth of cool gear from the mall. I never saw him do much in the way of survival, other than talk to a camera for a few days while starving.

Like what? I don't watch either show often, but in the few episodes I've seen I don't recall anything very silly.

That is the way I see it as well. Sure Bear Grylls stages stuff but he does know his stuff. I have seen him make fire and shelter in just about any scenario. Of coarse I am not going to go climbing any crazy cliffs if I did not have to but since he is physically fit and enjoys the challenge he shows the techniques to do it if you or I had to.
