Man electrocuted by urinating on power line. (OUCH!)
He had just crashed his car into a power pole and apparently didn't see wire.

    The Associated Press

MONTESANO, Wash. - Authorities believe a Washington man was killed by accidentally urinating on a downed power line after a car crash.

Grays Harbor County sheriff's Deputy Dave Pimentel said Monday 50-year-old Roy Messenger was not seriously hurt after he collided with a power pole Friday and called a relative to pull his car from a ditch.

However, family members found Messenger electrocuted when they arrived.

Pimentel says Messenger apparently urinated into a roadside ditch but didn't see the live wire. The urine stream likely served as a conductor, allowing the electricity to reach his body.

Pimentel says there will be an autopsy but burn marks indicated the way the electricity traveled through Messenger's body.

So much for MythBusters. They said this couldn't happen. Our urine stream isn't solid enough.

They also didn't use as much electricity as a powerline either.

If it was high enough voltage he would have been electrocuted through the ground. Didn't need to wiz. Single phase voltage is viable through several feet of earth if my days as a line clearance tree trimmer serve me well. Can anyone substantiate that?

That's true. To be fair they tested whether or not you could die by electrocution by peeing on the 3rd rail at a subway. Though I'm not sure of the differences in how much power was flowin.

I just watched a show yesterday about a little fish that swam up this guy's unit and lodged way up there and had to be surgically removed. It was always thought to have been a wive's tale. Guess not...:whistling:

    Ouch.

This somehow reminds me of the Independence Day BBQ where I forgot to tend the hot dogs on the grill.

Why does this sound like a DUI situation?

"Step potential" is what you are referring to and you are right, it is possible in certain circumstances such as sub station fences or even standing outside of the fence where station ground conductor has been stolen.
I think the ground fault current at the particular location would be a important factor. I've not heard of this happening in a single phase live wire down situation but it seems plausible.
It will be interesting to hear what our GT EE's have to contribute to this thread.

Myth or not I wouldn't give it a try. Raised on a farm we always heard the story about a guy pissing on an electric fence and getting his gentiles lit up like a Christmas tree. It scared us enough to not try it.

IIRC the Mythbusters used a "Third Rail @ 600 VAC. That power line was probably @ 7,200 VAC or higher. Rural feeds to substations can be 12,500 VAC or higher. When one is working with high voltages, the laws of physics are much more strongly applied. In the Mythbusters episode, they found that the urine stream broke into droplets with enough of a gap between them to prevent completion of the circuit.

The victim here wet down a very high voltage line. It's my guess that the space between droplets wasn't enough to prevent arcing between them. So the high voltage followed the droplets to their source. Nailed him right in the antenna, it did! I don't think he knew what hit him.:shocked:
