At the shooting range where I shoot (The Bullet Hole in Overland Park, KS) today a man committed suicide.

Not much info yet, but will update when I get more. Here's the current link.

    http://www.kansascity.com/2010/03/21/1827683_one-shot-at-gun-range.html?storylink=omni_popular

Weirdly enough I went in there yesterday to pick up a check from a gun I sold there.

Not that it's their fault, But I wish I had enough money to open my own range in the area, we really don't have another one sizable enough to compete. And the customer service at this place is severely lacking... Anyone want to go in with me?

    That's very sad. :(
I wish people would seek medical/professional help before doing something so...permanent like that.

Yes tragic that someone feels that low.
Wonder how long til someone tries to sue the range for something to do with it.

Apparently this isn't the first time it has happened. In 1997 three new members rented guns and shot themselves (fatally) while on the range. They've supposedly instituted a 24 hour hold since then for new members to rent firearms.

I know not all ranges do this, but wouldn't you think they would have someone on the range at ALL times now? AKA a rangemaster... Right now they can barely see the range from their little "box".

It seems like this happens about every couple months around the country.

Too bad there's not a legal, painless, private, dignified way for people to end their lives.

I know of what I speak. My Father shot himself when I was young.

Probably "money problems" and he didn't want to die alone at home.

Just call it an abortion in the 103rd trimester and the dems will be all over it and make it LAW.

I believe the policy at the range I frequent most often is to not rent a gun to an individual unless they bring one of their own or have someone with them. I assume their rationale is if someone is thinking of offing themselves and they have a gun, their is no reason to have to go to a range to do the deed.

I'm not sure what good a range master on the line would do. If I was a range master, I sure wouldn't try to stop someone I thought was going to kill themselves. It's not worth getting shot over. I guess I could shoot the individual before he could kill himself though.

As noble as that sounds...just imagine the lawsuit you would incur.

Just over 50% of suicides in the U.S are firearm related. Why do it at a range? Maybe because he didn't want a loved one finding him...or didn't want to sit in a lonely apartment for 3 weeks until someone called the super because of the smell.

    Either way its tragic.

I've always told my wife: If either of us ever got even a hint of those thoughts in our head...quit our jobs...sell what we can for what we can...cash out everything and head to Cabo...or the Carribean.

I can't imagine a life on the beach occassionally working drinking rum all day in the sun is a bad thing

    Buck,

I'm saddened to hear that. Honestly.

Holy crap, that's the range I use too! They seem like a bunch of pretty nice guys running the place, I hope this doesn't adversely impact them.

We used to have a Bar just south of here called "The Bullet Hole".. Always stuck me as a strange name for a bar.

I understand what you mean about ranges, we've only got 2 indoor here... Both are kinda pricey. One is a great range, one is.. meh.

We do have one outdoor range about 10mi from my house, where I'm a member.. Its not a bad place, but no rifle.

I know a woman whose father shot himself fatally at that same range. I do not know what year it was.

I have taken many first time shooters to The Bullet Hole in the past six years.

It's this easy: No rental to individuals - only groups with firearm(s). Want to rent a gun? Bring a friend and a gun.

Want to shoot yourself at my range? Your friend will have to mop your dumb *** up.

I used to go to that range from time to time when I lived in KC. Like you said, nothing new. I remember a couple suicides there...

If the Lake City shooting range is still there, it's worth the drive to Blue Springs.

OP Police used that range when I was a Cop in 1967 there.
