This is both disappointing and encouraging. Disappointing for obvious reasons and encouraging for WA. state residents. We need to split East from West here and each have their own EC vote.

I still don’t see the problem. While a candidate may get the most first choice votes, more people still choose 2 or more candidates over the person with the most 1st choice votes. The will of the people is still served.

The social democrats don't see an issue either, which is why this has taken hold in Maine.

    Here's what happens.

    3 people run for office.
    Everyone rank votes.
#1 and #2 split the first two slots, and neither gets a majority vote.
#3 - the THIRD BEST candidate in EVERYONE's opinion, gets the job.

    It's lunacy.

Is the method you describe above what is being proposed? If so, then I would agree this system is not effective.
However, in your scenario, imagine if those people who voted for candidate 3, whom was eliminated due to lack of 1st choice votes, voted overwhelmingly for candidate 1. Candidate 1, while not the first choice of a minority of voters, is clearly the people’s choice over candidate 2.

All this is designed to do is give Democrats an advantage. It's a trick. They should hang for this.

This is exactly what ranked choice voting is. Remember my example, #3 was Nobody’s first or second choice, but won anyway.

This is why businesses abandoned this is the 90s as part of the decision making process. It’s flawed and nearly always results in a poor choice.

Anything can be applied poorly, but in theory this could be a superior system.

Because they cheat and work the system while the Republicans do it the honorable and honest way.

Then there’s no more risk compared to the system already in place.

If that was true then the Dems wouldn't be pushing so hard for this scheme.

Tom, Dick and Harry are running for dog catcher in a very small town with 10 voters.

    Tom gets 5 votes.
    Dick gets 3 votes
    Harry gets 2.

Tom didn't win because he only got 50%, not a "majority".

Vote goes to the 2nd choice of the ballots.

    Tom gets 3 votes
    Dick gets 6 votes
    Harry gets 1 vote.

Dick wins, even though more people didn't want him.

How can you even venture to believe that this is a "good thing"??

Did you read the subject of the thread?

I mean, y’all have lovely lobsters and all, but aside from maple syrup, what is there? Your beaches are crap, camping is pretty good, fishing and hunting as well, but that’s pretty much it. Just saying :whistling:

The way I read the process above was that Harry gets eliminated and his 2 voters have their votes redistributed their 2nd choice.

For a state that’s so lousy perhaps you can explain why all these damned outta staters want to move up here then.

EVERYBODY'S second choice vote is used....so the "winner" isn't the first count person who got the most votes.

If you rank the same person as your first and second choice, your second choice vote is "disqualified'......

If you don't fill in a second or third choice..your second and third choice are disqualified.

Why would they approve of such a stupid system if it did not?

Because, I’m picturing it as a tiered system of elimination.

Tom, Dick and Harry are running for dog catcher in a very small town with 10 voters.

    Tom gets 4 votes.
    Dick gets 4 votes
    Harry gets 2.

Harry is eliminated because he got the least amount of votes. Both voters who chose Harry picked Tom as their second choice.

    Tom gets 6 votes
    Dick gets 4 votes
Harry is out of the running.

Tom wins, as more people preferred Tom to Dick, even though 2 people preferred Harry to Tom.
