MAYBE I remember this happening once before...

just got a small trapping-related book I ordered from a private individual; and when it arrived, it had been opened. Stamped on the outside was a note that it was opened/inspected by USPS.

    happened to anyone else?

    (it's not paranoia if....)

I ship vinyl records quite often and the last time I was in the PO, the clerk told me media mail is subject to inspection--by whom and how often, she didn't say. They do this to make sure people aren't shipping non-media at the media rate. So--yes--they can inspect it. According to her, it's the only mail they can open and inspect.

Since it was a book, I'm assuming it's Media Mail... It's very common for them to check Media Mail to make sure it is indeed an eligible item. Lots of folks ship all kinds of stuff via Media Mail that is not at all allowed, but was WAY cheaper than Priority Mail.

ETA: Post above beat me to it... I guess I didn't read the thread, but wanted to post a reply anyway.

USPS is always snooping on the media mail due to cut rate pricing.

And I always have to read their arcane rules on what is and what is not media mail.

I had this happen to me several years ago as well. I collected comic books for years . Well, several years passed and I decided to get rid of them and list them on EBay. Anyway, I did pretty well selling them and I always used the media mail option. I can’t remember exactly how it happened but the next time I went to the post office to ship some comics out they wanted to check the contents. Ok... not a problem I’m thinking . They opened it up and immediately rejected my package. Why?? Because I was using their Priority Mail boxes that I cut open and turned the box inside out so it wouldn’t say Priority Mail. My "Blue Press" almost always has those seals along the edge of the pages broken when it comes. Think my mail man is either into reloading or hoping for some type of porn inside.

Were you using the free priority boxes that are free for priority mail use?

Exactly. Many cheap people used to do this but now they print Priority mail on the inside as well. Some people used to get them for free and then use them to send packages by other delivery companies. Ethics aren’t what they used to be. Many people also try to use Media Mail for things it’s not allowed for as well.

I believe the post office can open any package they receive.

Most of the mail we receive is advertising for senior care facilities, grocery ads and catalogs we never subscribed to, so they're welcome to open ALL of our mail.

Not true. However media mail could always be open once.

If you say you want the media mail rate we would go through the process and not call you a liar. Just set it aside for later. With a witness we would inspect the package for 100% media mail. A vast majority had other items and the customer thought they were going to save money and scam USPS. We would stamp "This package has been inspected .... " stamp to keep it from any more inspections. If there were none media mail item,s we would stamp it postage due. If it was still in town of origin the return to sender. If found in route then then the person receiving it had the choice to pay postage or refuse. If refused the sender had to pay if they wanted their stuff back.

What if a package had a strange smell and/or was leaking some kind of liquid and it was sent first class? Would that be inspected?

I ordered an IAC valve from Rockauto and when the package showed up it was torn open and my valve was missing. That's all I got.

The building would be evacuated and we would call fire department and let them handle it.
