Are Magpul PMAGs the current gold standard when it comes to AR-15 magazines? If not, what is?

I tried out the fit today with my WASR 10/63 and a couple of Magpul PMAG gen M3 AK mags, and it was tight with almost no wobble. Difficult to get out, but not too hard. I really like them (have not shot any rounds with them yet), and they may become my "go-to" mags. I have 3, all brand new, to add to my stack of other polymer mags.

So because I'm getting an AR in the near future, I've been thinking about mags to use for it. Gunmagwarehouse has a package of 6 for about $75, which seems like a steal.

What say you, and what brands and models of mags do you like to use in yours?

Yes, they are the gold standard. They are cheap and easy to find. Gen 2 and 3 are good to go. I get Gen 2 since they are a little cheaper.

They are still my top choice. Bang for buck, I don’t think anyone else can compete.

Yes, they are some of the best AR mags available but 6 for $75 is not a steal on them. DSG Arms has them 10 for $98 right now. If you look around the average $10 price each can be found if bundled.

I've never bought from them, I'm just going by what I've read in some of the comments on their website. Apparently, their customer service, according to them, can be a hit-or-miss.....mostly miss, it sounds like.

Any major differences between the M2 and the M3? I notice the M2 is less expensive. The 6/$75 I was looking at is for the M3 variant. I assume the Gen M3 is newer.

Magpul PMags are awesome and I own scores of them, but they are not the gold standard for ARs. GI Mags with non-tilt followers are. Mil spec lowers are designed around the metal magazine an some have issues with PMAGs falling free of the mag well. Okay Surefeeds are fantastic and are my personal favorite GI Mags.

I have some Pmags, and they're fine......but, I prefer aluminum milspec mags, myself.

I really like the Lancer magazines. They have steel feed lips. Yes I like Magpuls as well.

Eh.....I guess it just seems like they are everywhere you look.....competition, police, military, home defense, self defense, etc etc. I guess I just equated that with being the "Gold Standard".

Aluminum USGI (OEM), not something plastic (sorry). I have more Colt 20rd than anything else, though some other USGI are more nicely finished.

I have 10 Gen1 Magpul mags and , frankly , I just don`t see the need for replacing them with gen2 or 3 . I use them on the range . The mags (all ten of them) work perfectly . I have 5 with the see thru window and five without it and I am very happy with all . Just my 2 cents .
I also have an aluminum Army mag (30 rd that originally came with my AR-15) that I used only once . It is aluminum and can be dented , so I just keep it on the safe but it also works great , too .
I know that later models have better features , but to me , none of that motive me to spend money on more mags .
What I did instead , was to buy a P-Mag 60 rd drum a couple of months ago that it also works flawlessly .

Not trying to sound condescending but popularity does not necessarily equate with top quality. Price is a far more powerful driver for a lot of people. PMags did get an endorsement from the USMC though, countered by the Army who now endorses metal mags. PMags are good but I prefer, like J.R., metal 20 rounders. 30 rounders get in the way if prone might be necessary. I own 30's but the ones I have loaded for defensive purposes are USGI metal 20's.

I not a plastic mag guy , magpul included do to some of the same issues noted above . All ours are D&H aluminum mags round cap and a some ASC stainless steel mags . Local general stores manages to keep these priced well , D&H are 9.98 each and ASC is 11.99 each and a few free okay surefeed 20 rounders but they get no range time today . Nostalgia !!

Some times you can buy on line for the same price with no tax and if you buy enough free shipping too . Watch for blemished finishes for a couple bucks more off . Thats what our dealers asc mags are .

Had to go back and check by have some 10 round C products dura mags too . Cost was higher at 14 dollars but handy on the shooting bench are for hunting .

I second the Okay Surefeed E2s and the Lancer mags. Magpuls are fantastic and what I would call the ol trusty of the magazine world but there are better options.

However for AK, I have a couple PMAGs for the range and they do fine for that, but IMO the gold standard modern AK poly mag is the Bulgarian Circle 10. Only downside is they're pricier.

I'm lucky to have two Bulgarian mags for my WASR....one is a 40-round "Bullet" mag, and the other is a Circle-10 waffle mag. Both have always worked perfectly.....you are right though: that Circle-10 is pricey. About $54 right now, IIRC. The 40-round Bulgarian is about $20 IIRC.

There was a time when the ((10)) 30's would go on sale sometimes for $35 or so. Maybe we'll get back there eventually.
