The Battleship Texas. The oldest Dreadnought left in the World!

*sigh* I have done a lot of things in my life but I never answered the call of the sea. I grew up until I was a teen on the coast. I can remember going fishing in Galveston bay in the 80's with my Grandfather OBM. We would boat over to Todd Shipyards to see this wonderful old ship up in dry dock while they were fixing Her up.

What a coincidence- I just saw her yesterday; I took the exact same pic too (along with several others)! I just haven't brought my camera in from the car and posted the pics.

My mom's sister lived in Houston when I was a kid. Once, when visiting, my uncle took me to see the Texas. I had so much fun he took me a second time.

This was quite a few years ago - before all the litigation issues dealing with safety. I could climb to the bridge and the crows nest. I could climb down to the engine room and everything in between.

I could climb into the turrets. The AA guns had the wheels on the mounts and one could elevate the guns with them. It was fantastic.

Later I heard the ship fell into dis-repair. Too bad. I also heard they had to limit the access (ladders, etc.) due to liability issues.

But, man, what a time a 10 YO had on that thing.

Some of my fondest memories are my Grandfather taking me to the USS Texas.

Rabbi stole my thunder; I just wentto see the USS Texas yesterday, and intended to show my pics here. There's no point in starting a new thread, so I'll post them here.

As to photography- I have had no professional training.

If I can figure out the photo editing stuff, all of these can fit together to make a big photo of the ship from not-so-far-away.

Where is that ship currently moored? I was on the Missouri (BB 63) once in HI but it didn't have much open at the time. I've got pictures of that but they're not digital and I don't have a way to make them so. I wouldn't mind checking that out if I'm in the area.

I have also been on that ship with my grandfather in the early 90's. Great memories. Thanks.

That is quite an impressive ship. She used to make big bangs..just glad she wasn't made into a reef.
