Bought a bottle of Hawaiian Huli Huli marinade . Stuff is made and bottled in Maui, HI. Soaked a pork shoulder roast over night and qued slowly over indirect heat (until 180 degrees internal). Man was it good. Good Asian BBQ Pork taste on the outside, juicy on the inside.

Hawaii's own version of barbecued chicken is cooked with Huli-Huli Sauce made with pure Hawaiian brown sugar cane along with soy sauce, fresh ginger and more.

    Ingredients

125 ml (1/2 cup) extra thick shoyu (soy sauce)
    1 Tbsp. minced Garlic
    1 Tbsp. minced Ginger
    Lemon or Lime Juice
    Crushed chili pepper
    1/2 tsp. brown sugar

    Method

    1. In a saucepan, stir the sugar into the soy sauce over low heat until dissolved;
    2. add the other ingredients and simmer for several minutes.

For a prepared huli-huli sauce, I prefer Aloha brand. They make an excellent soy sauce, too. It is so good that Japanaese tourist buy it and take it home!

No, huli huli pork is a bbq pork. Kahlua pig is traditionally cooked in an imu (buried with hot rocks and coals covered with banana leaves, ti leaves, and wet burlap bags). The pig is cut up before cooking. After cooking, the pig is shredded, mixed with Hawaiian salt, and minced pig fat is added. All this is tossed in a large bowl and served.

If you can't dig an imu, here is a pretty close approximation:

    KAHLUA PIG

    4 lbs. pork roast
    1 bottle liquid smoke
Enough rock salt to cover the palm of your hand (about 1 1/2 tsp.)

Put all ingredients in a crock pot. Cook on low for about 18 hours. Cool, debone, and clean off fat. Great on a bed of rice or in a sandwich.

To make it taste a little more like the real thing, go to a florist and buy some ti leaves and add to the crockpot.
