Maadi AK Parts Help

I have a Maadi, and I have made two trips to the range with it, and both times I have noticed that it experiences pierced primers. No failures to feed or extract, just the occaisional puff of smoke from the reciever to indicate the popped primer.

I tried to dissassemble the bolt to clean out the firing pin channel, and firstly, the firing pin does not have any impediment to its movement, I just thought it would not hurt to make sure there were no pieces of primer in the channel. Anyway, the pins for the firing pin, and the extractor are not moving. the pin that secures the firing pin looks like it was not intalled all the way at some time, and the pin was protruding a bit, and it was worn down from rubbing against the bolt carrier. Some of the material was smeared over the top of the hole and has an appearance of being peened.

I did find a site where I was able to order a replacement bolt, though it does not specify whether it would be compatible with the Maadi or not. But It may be over kill to buy a new bolt. My question is, where can I find new pins? I guess I will have to take the bolt to a gunsmith for their removal, and then they wil need to be replaced.

KVAR has some firing pins, I'm not sure what would work in a Maadi though. Maybe you can contact them to find out.

If you're talking about the actual pins that hold the firing pin in, so far as I know you can get the appropriate size metal stock from a hardware store and use it, but that might be the wrong way. I don't think I've ever seen any of the actual pins for sale anywhere.
Have you actually looked at the primers after you see the puff of smoke to verify?

After you get the firing pin out, I'd just file it down a little so it doesn't protrude as much.

Might be overkill but here's the complete bolt for $40>>

Pretty sure the Maddi uses standard size pins for the bolt as most other countries.
Check the pin you remove before ordering>>>

Yes, I verified the primers. Its Herters ammo, and the primers seem to be set deep on some, and not so deep on others. This inconsistency can be contributing, but I think the firing pin may be longer than needed. I get really deep hits compared to the same ammo in my Saiga.

Thank you! You are the man. :wavey:

How is Herters? Who manufactures it? I heard it was junk from a couple sources.

It says "Made In Russia" on the box, and it is marketed through Cabelas. I have to say, every round has gone bang, and hit the target. I bought a couple of thousand rounds because it was cheap. $200 a case.

A little google fu for you...... http://www.google.com/search?source...IE-SearchBox&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&rlz=1I7ACEW_en
Try some other ammo before changing anything. That ammo has the newer "Wolf" brand style of recessed primer that is softer but recessed to "avoid slamfires". They do get pierced in some rifles. When they went to soft primers they went to that odd recess but they have been trouble.

Thanks for the info. I have tried Golden Dragon, and MFS and S&B. I have had some pierced primers in all the brands tried, but the Herters was the worst offender by far.

As of today, I worked on removing the pins from my bolt, and the pin that secures the firing pin was very tight. It took a few good whacks with a hammer on the pin punch to get it started moving. Got it out, shortend the firing pin protrusion a tad (.010) (it is still protruding .055 in the fired position) and pulled the bullets on a bunch of Herters, and the other two brands of ammo I have on hand, and it fired the primers with no problem, and now the hits look better, without any signs of getting to piercing.

I will hit the range on Saturday to verify function, and see if I have any more pierced primers. The primer hits look just like my Saiga's hit now, so I should be ok.

I have an extra bolt that is new unissued Maadi coming, along with an extra set of pins for the firing pin and extractor. I like this Maddi, it is an RML, and the quality of finish is way better than most AKs I have run across, so I want to have a few extra parts on hand.

I will check the fit of the bolt and headspace when it shows up. Being that it is unissued Maadi, I probably wont have to worry about excessive headspace, and more than likely, will not have to do any more than stone the lugs a bit, if even that. I do have a NoGo gauge to check.

Sounds like you're making progress in the right direction. :D
Let us know how it goes.
Went to the range yesterday. I had a lot of pierced primers. Got home, and the USPS had delivered my new bolt. I tried it out, and it worked smoothly, and locked up fully, no problem. I checked with an unfired case (bullet pulled, no powder, primer fired) and the bolt closes and goes into full battery. NoGo gauge confirms no headspace issues, so off I go to the range again today. Happily, I had no pierced primers with 3 different brands of ammo. I am good to go again.

The old bolt, the firing pin hole had gotten too big in diameter, allowing too much protrusion.
