I can get them for about the same price...
Why not just get an actual .22 like the Browning Buckmark or the Ruger?
I want a platform at least similar to a SD pistol...mainly for teaching women.
For the same price having the M&P will be better because you will have a dedicated pistol for .22LR with similar characteristics than a centerfire pistol.
Picked up a SW M&P22 for just that purpose.
It eats any ammo I've fed it reliably.
Seems to function fine when dirty.
Longer trigger pull similar to (not identical) to Glock.
Plenty accurate enough for training (2" at 25 ft offhand), but makes the shooter pay attention.
I just picked up an AA 22 con. for my 23 and it is great. You are limited to three brands of 22 that it shoots best. My 23 can now fire 40, 9mm and 22, if there ever was a SHTF situation my 23 is the gun I would grab. The AA unit is surprisingly accurate, I shoot it better then my Buckmark. The main problem is finding the AA unit at any price, I got lucky at a gun show and picked it up for $ 269. If I can find one for my 26 I'll buy it in a heart beat.
I have both. I must be really lucky because my AA seems to shoot just about everything. I guess the training question is what brand of 9mm or whatever will the student be using.
I did the same thing a few years ago. Tried to figure out if I wanted a dedicated .22 pistol or a conversion for my G23.
After quite a while, I chose the conversion, and here's why:
I wanted a tool to build my skills on the G23, my every-day carry. Though the "report" is nothing like that of the S&W .40, the trigger (most important element in firing a weapon) is consistent.
As a result, I have thrown nearly 7K of .22's through my conversion. I NEVER hesitate to go to the range or my gravel pit, and the cost is quite MINIMAL.
I can tell you that my accuracy is good on both the conversion and stock barrels. With the cost of ammunition today (whew, when will this frenzy end?) and the consistency of using my G23, the conversion is the BOMB
