I believe the excessively loud rap music coming from cars is purposely used to offend other people .I stopped for gasoline in Memphis and felt threatened by all the cars around me blaring this stuff while I was pumping gas.
What is their reason for this other than to intimidate?

I think it's more of an attention / peacocking thing than intentional intimidation.

When I was a teenager I was seriously blasting some loud ass Dire Straits, Tom Petty, Whitesnake, Motley Crew and even a few rap songs. Its what young teenagers with their first cars do, nothing more.

I avoid neighborhoods where the thugs blast ghetto music. Three S rule.

If I can hear it, it's too loud.

But the deep base, so vibratory that even Helen Keller could enjoy it, is kinda entertaining. Especially if it's a junky car and you can hear it rattling apart.

People have been doing this forever. You are only complaining about it because you don't like the genre of music.

If they were blasting R&B would you think they're trying to intimidate people?

Want to piss them off, blast Metallica at the gas station. Enter Sandman does a great job of showing disrespect to the local ghetto trash while they blast whatever crap they might have on.

I’ll tell you what offensive is; Death Metal, Grindcore, Thrash Metal.

Pretty much the main focus of my large vinyl collection.

Although I've toned it down a bit over the years, I've been blasting AC/DC since I was 16 years old and had my first car. 1963 Plymouth Belvedere four door. I still crank it in the '56, the vette and my pickup. Haters be damned.

    Not me.

I just LOVE to have my teeth rattled while unavoidably hearing, "DIE MOTHER ****ER, DIE MOTHER ****ER, DIE...!!!"

Especially when I'm near young children.

It's so culturally uplifting for one and all and obviously meant to be shared.

Applies to any music genre played really unnecessarily loud. Not less annoying than being in traffic with a diesel pickup spewing godawful smelly and dirty exhaust.

It's to advertise that they have the lowest IQ. There is no other way for them to communicate this message other than with a jungle beat.. It's also a challenge to the other.... inhabitants.... that they are the king of the lowest IQ prize. What's even better, is the BABY'S strapped into car seats with a big speaker box beside them with 2 giant subs blaring the music right into their little ears. If I hear rap music at a red light I assume the driver is barely working in the +/-50 IQ range. Dumb... Dumb as a box of rocks.

Trying to impress random strangers with a public display of their poor music choices.. We all know it's not about their enjoyment of the music.. It's trying to make a point to everyone around them how small their weenie is, and how they should not be allowed to reproduce.. But they will and they do.. Many times over and thereby complete the cycle of stupidity.
