i sold my 2002 gixxer 750 and want another bike. i have a buddy with a 2001 aprilia rsv mille for sale. anyone have any aprilia experience and advice?

i am looking at 600s, so i'm thinking his bike may be a bit more of a bike than i'm looking for, but its a great deal...

A current 600 is more bike than that one is. Very heavy bike that is WAY down on power. I love Aprilia, I just do not love that bike.

thanks guys. i'm going to try to stay around (or under) $5500. 5'9", so yea relatively small...

fear the awesome power of the toy poodle. hah. i finally convinced the wife to let me get a doberman. the breeder i have chosen is expecting a litter and should be ready late october. wow, that was off topic.

Ah, the Aprilia Mille, the stuff that dreams are made of. That's a pretty blue color scheme. Power is modest at around 115-hp or so at the wheel, but the torque is what this bike is all about. Yes, it's heavy but it carries the weight well and the riding position is extreme. You splay yourself on top of it. Looks like that bike has an aftermarket pipe on it. What else was done to the bike?

The power comes on pretty explosively and you can do some mild tunings to help out with the top end (Evoluzione velocity stacks & air box kit). If you don't want to invest in a Power Commander then Evoluzione also has a fuel pressure regulator that would help with dialing in the fuel mapping. I highly recommend investing in a PCIII and have somebody dyno tune it. The fuel pressure regulator was a pain in the ass to install & tune.

The engine is pretty much bulletproof and MAY need valve adjustments by around 24,000-miles. Note that I said "MAY".

If you're on the heftier side of 160-lbs, the springs for the forks and shock need to go. Hell, it's a 7-years-old bike, the springs probably need replacement and fluids changed anyway.

The chassis is capable, that's for damn sure. Very stable in the corner but also flickable.

i push 146# on a heavy day, so springs shouldn't be an issue. to my knowledge this is what he has done to it: renegade hi-mount full exhaust, evoluzione clutch slave cylinder, corbin seat...

Spring shouldn't be an issue for your weight, but the bike is old, so chances are the forks and shocks need to be revamped anyway. Ohlins kits are pretty cheap if you can do it yourself and they make a heck of a difference.

The motor is strong but has a dead spot at midrange around 4500-5500 RPM. Very pronounced. The Evoluzione airbox kit (comes included with a high flowing air filter) + PCIII with dyno tune should help quite a bit. If you're going to be messing around with the airbox then might as well go for the Evoluzione velocity stacks (they're pretty cheap). Makes a big difference at top end.

That's a very pretty blue color. I have yet to see one with that color scheme.

Make sure that you like the riding position. It's un-godly-comfortable. Very classic Italian riding position with the rider pretty much laying on top of the bike with arms and legs all akimbo.

AF1 Racing http://www.af1racing.com out of Texas stocks quite a few parts and pieces for repair & upgrade. You don't have to worry much about electronics funking out on you and unless you're very unlucky, nothing mechanical would funk out on you either. So all you primarily need is services for upkeeps and modifications to make you happy in the pants. AF1 also runs the Aprilia forum which is a fount of information as well.

I try to not own more than one bike per manufacturer. Aprilia cured me of that notion.

PS If you were to go with that bike and want some doodads, I have some that I can sell you for cheap (velocity stacks, programmed PCIII, but I don't know if my airbox kit is still any good). I took those items off my wrecked Tuono a couple of years back.

Just my opinion, you will be just as quick on a frontline 600, more then likely more comfotable, get better mileage, and repairs (unless you do your own) will be less.

But it won't be as fun. And how's the repair going to be less? Aprilia had more than proven itself in the reliability and quality departments.

i wanna aftermkt exhaust, maybe a tsukigi
it makes the best (or among the top 3) power, drops some weight, but it's kinda loud.
i've had 2 yoshi trs systems on my last 2 busa's, at $675 from motoxoutlet, they're a good bargain.
