Ive owned and shot many guns over the years. But I buy guns for two reasons usually: fun and defense. However ive been considering getting a rifle I could hunt with if the need arised( or necessity).

The sister in law has what she calls a "remington .243 bolt gun" Which I have surmised is either a remington 700 in .243 or a remington 770 .243 sporter. I have no experience with hunting rifles so i'm looking for some input.

She bought it new and has fired 40-50 rounds through it total. It's coming with a scope, which she thinks is a bushnel, but cant remember. She wants $150. Thanks for the input.

Also does the .243 cartridge suck on anything but large varmints and small deer as ive read? She downed 4-5 deer with it she says.

    A .243 is a fine hunting cartridge,.......for $150, I'd be all over that!

The .243 is a pretty fair all around cartridge. It is ideal for small to medium game, but if it's an emergency hunting gun, it will take bigger animals with good shot placement.

The 770 package isn't the best gun ever made, but it is very serviceable. $150 sounds like a deal to me.

Seems pretty low risk. If you don't like it you won't lose much and will gain some insight into what you WOULD like in a bolt gun. .243 is a pretty flat shooting, low recoil, and versatile cartridge.

If I were you I'd buy the gun for the $150. Let us know what model it is.

    Agreed.

IF this is the 700 or mdl 7, (have no experience with the 770), and you don't like the .243, have it re-barreled for .308 or even .338 Federal!!!!

    Still. . . . $150.00 is very reasonable. . . no. . . great!!
