So I'v been browsing around the AR-10 world and was looking for some thoughts and experiences. I really like some of the Armalite versions but I know there are several makers.

So what say you GT? I'm weighing either a 20 in floated barrel or the 16 in carbine.:wavey:

I just bought a DPMS 16 inch carbine, the LR-308T. It's a great gun and the fit and finish on it is excellent IMO. took it to the range for the "break in" period and it performed as expected.

Not really sure if Armalites offere any distinct advantage over other makers but I love mine, especially for under a grand.

My shooting buddy had an Armalite AR-10 ... nice gun. Fairly accurate, though I wasn't fond of the finish on the Armalites, very matte grayish, not black enough IMO.

I myself am partial the DPMS 308s, but admittedly that's because I had a 20" DPMS bull-barrel .223 upper on a Bushmaster lower that would shoot under .7 MOA all day long. Had a few 5 shot groups under .5MOA when I really concentrated on doing my part. I've heard some reviews of the LRT-SASS that are not great - so keep that in mind.

I would like to get a good AR-10, but the ones I like cost from the 2,500 to 3,000 dollar range.

My pick would be the LaRue OBR, I heard a lot of good things about this one. It also gives you a 20MOA base (which I think the others do not), and a match trigger, also I believe it was used to win the snipers competition.

I also like the LMT 308, which is being used right now by the Brits in Afghanistan. Reports are that it is also very accurate.

Noveske N6, I like but haven't heard a lot about them.

Scar 17, These are also accurate, and I think they could be more reliable than the above, due to the piston design.

I like all of the above, but there are many choice's. I'm also looking into the Mega MA TEN. Reports are that it's doing very well. All of these Rifles are being sold right now in Ca, by the way.

my currenty configuration. It may not be as nice as the higher end .308s in AR form but it fits me for my needs. Dont really plan on shooting it past 3-400 yards and they are very accurate out to that distance, even with my noobness in rifle shooting.

ARs in .308 come in two basic flavors, based on which type of magazine they use. Then there are several sub-species.

1) The Armalite AR-10 uses a modified M-14 magazine and was designed to have as much parts commonality with the AR-15 as possible.

2) Stoner SR-25 uses a magazine based on the original AR10 from the 1960s. DPMS followed this route with their .308 rifles.

While there are some parts that are common between these two flavors, it is best to ask to be certain.

The original AR10 from the 1960s has no parts in common with the AR-15, and is a very different beast from modern .308 ARs.

There are other flavors of .308 ARs that use G3 magazines and FAL magazines. Generally, if you ask whether they are compatible with Armalite or DPMS parts, you will get a clear answer.

As to which is best, the AR10 from the 1960s is the best! Good luck finding one.

Depending on what you are wanting to spend, local class 3 dealer here does custom AR's and has some nice AR-10's. Might try to contact him see what he can do for ya. Very nice and trust worthy individual. Why not pick up a suppressor while you are at it?

http://www.d9firearms.com/ -his site check out the for sale section he has an AR-10 in there.

I've got the AP4 configured DPMS LR-308. 16" carbine. It will shoot dang near 1' groups with the iron sights, so I'm sure it will do 1" or better with a scope. Fits and finish are excellent. Stock mags had problems but Beta Co. and Pmags fixed that. I've considered selling it and getting an M1a or a Pof, but realistically neither of those is going to do anything my DPMS won't already do.

If I were ever to sell it, it would be for a Ruger Hawkeye African in 375 Ruger.

The AR10 platform, regardless of manufacturer, can be an extremely accurate platform. The Armalite versions I have shot have been very well built. That said, I would consider all of them to be immature technology. Durability and reliability under hard use are at best debatable. If you want an extremely accurate competition and hunting rifle, go for it. If you want to bet your life on a .308 semi auto, buy a SCAR, FAL, HK91, or properly built M14 clone.
