I just turned 21 last summer so I'm a newbie to good spirits, and I'm looking for something to sip while relaxing on the weekend. I've tried Captain Morgan Private Stock rum, it's pretty smooth but the spice flavor is a little overpowering, this weekend I got a bottle of Brugal Anejo because I've heard that it's pretty good for the price, it's drinkable but it's not as smooth as the Captain Morgan and it's not sweet at all, it kind of tastes like sawdust. I'd like to keep the price at $30 or less, are there any smooth, sweet sipping rums in that price range?

Not to be a dick, but others will.

Use the search feature, I know this subject has been brought up twice that I know of.

I did a search and found a couple of threads, but it seems most rum drinkers prefer dry rum with the oak taste, I'm looking for a sweet rum and I don't really like the wood taste.

Is there a hidden term of service that says a topic may be talked about once, then never brought up again but only searched for? This is a discussion forum, not a library. And what you're looking for is Appleton Estates Jamaica rum!

Kilo Kai must be Hawaiian for cough surup, the worst crap with the word rum on the label I have ever tried ......and there is 1/2 a bottle here you can have. I never knew they spoke Hawaiian 'round the Caribbean in Curacao where the stuff is made but as my lovely girlfriend needed some spiced rum over the holidays I picked up a bottle. It will remain until next Christmas for nogg duties.

The OP is looking for sweetness in a rum but that is not the case with a non flavored rum. The Cpt Morgans and the Sailor Jerry stuff will be more his liking but as he is only 21 things will change later on.

A good place to start for sipping rums is Mt Gay. It has the most bourbon-like taste.

Don't waste your $$$ on non flavored/spiced rums then. Enjoy what you like.

    Mount gay special reserve.

$17 for a 750, just grab the lightest colored mt gay rum on the top shelf and you will have smooth sailing the rest of the night ;)

We have quite a long thread dealing with good sipping rums here:

Ask eric and all the moderators what they prefer. The search feature is there for a reason.

With that said, appleton is ok if you dont get the lowest priced one.
