Got a buddy looking at getting his first AR.
What brand should he look at?
    Probably a 16 inch barrel.
    Carbine or mid length gas.
    Adjustable stock
He wants a red dot, and back up sights.
What would you suggest as fair as a rifle and redot.
This would be his do all rifle.
I think his budget is $800ish rifle $300ish optic

I feel like my CMMG is a good middle choice.

Build one for under $500 and pend the $300 on an optic

He may have to wait to get exactly what he wants. There seems to be a shortage at the moment.

AR's are hard to come by right now. My cousin was looking at a M&P15 Sport II for $580. He waited to buy it and the price jumped $100 in 2 days. It's a sellers market right now.

Building a decent sub $750 rifle is tough now.

How picky you are with brand depends on his ammo budget. With ammo prices steadily going up (.45-.50/round this week), he probably won't be shooting it much for awhile.

S&w sport 2 is good. Try sportmans outdoor superstore. The ruger 5.56 is also good.

Strange market right now. Demand is high so retailers are getting top dollar. On the flip side, there's lots of people out of work so there's also some great deals to be had if you pay attention.

I'm amazed by how much AR's have gone up. Bought a Ruger AR556 pistol in early March for $539 on Grabagun. A few weeks later it was $729 on the same site.

Demand is the driver. World is gonna end, gotta have it now.
Been telling people for a long time, nobody wanted to hear it, so now they`ll pay the heavy price.

AR's had been cheap for awhile. The thought was that everyone that wanted one had one. But a global pandemic mixed with civil unrest changed that view.

I built mine from Palmetto State for less than $500. Granted I have added optic and options to it after the fact. But I love it.

This was also done before the world went to ****. So building one for less now, would be difficult.
