I've been an AT&T customer since it was Cingular Wireless, so many, many years. I stopped being "upgraded" and being under contractual obligation with AT&T years ago, since I noticed that they treat you like an actual human being when you can walk away from them as you please.

I've been buying my phones for years. Sometimes used, sometimes AT&T Go Phones.

I thought I would look at joining the masses and consider an iPhone5, so I checked the prices of them if you don't do a 2 year contract.

    $849.99

    Yeaaaaaaah....no.:rofl::rofl::rofl:

Still, I might consider buying a gently used iPhone4s, probably be easy to find in the next few weeks.

Only like it for 4G and the .5 inch larger screen. I will wait. I have the regular 4.

Plus, I don't like the absence of the YouTube app. Passbook is meaningless to me. Also the absence of the utility folder to move the non use icons in.

You can download the YouTube app! Google wanted more control over their interface, so apple let them.

You can CREATE a utility folder to out useless apps in, except the newsstand which actually is a special type of folder itself.

    Wow.

$275 seems to be what resellers are paying for iPhone 4s's, so you could probably buy one in a private sale for about that.

I assume that is for the 64gb model. The 16gb and 32gb models should be less expensive.

Saw on the news a break down of the IPhone cost to manufacture. A little over $200.00 parts and labor.

I read the reviews on the YouTube app from the app store. Very user unfriendly. I have faves saved on the original.

Yup, cause R&D and manufacturing equipment and factory space and every other cost associated with a product that aren't parts and labor are free!

I had heard $200 in parts. Labor, research & development, advertising, packaging, and shipping would all be additional costs.

I think the price is on par with the top Android phones.

Wait a little while, it'll be on Ebay for $100. Let the teenyboppers pay premium.

The new Apple-made Maps app really sucks.

You have something more powerful than a 5 year old laptop with a mobile phone and a camera that beats many decent point and shoots, and it fits in your pocket.

It should go without saying that they are very expensive to make. It is a marvel that they don't cost more. Apple does have a significant profit margin on their phones, but it is not really in the realm of laughing at--especially considering how much they wring out of the carriers when you get one on contract.

Regardless, AT&T isn't cutting your bill when you aren't subsidizing a phone, so you are throwing far more money away than you might one day have to eat in cancellation fees if you aren't letting them pay for one.

Actually an unlocked is 649 but that's still too much.

Well, I had a bellyfull of my Droid 2 Global, so I got the new iPhone yesterday from Verizon. It's lightning fast, and even faster on LTE. And, guess what... IT'S UNLOCKED!

News says it will work on another network like AT&T, not that I would be tempted to do so, but, when I'm overseas, I could pop a local mini sim in it if I wanted to.

Anyway, I'm thrilled with mine, and my household is now all Apple.
