I'm thinking a G34 with a light and maybe a halo sight or something. Has anyone set up a longslide for this purpose?

My nightstand gun is my G35 loaded up with 180gr HST's. I use Dawson narrow post FO on the front and a Warren Tactical semi U rear sight (no optics). I shoot this gun as well,as any in my safe.
To be honest though, the nightstand gun is only backup to the Beretta Comp loaded with Federal #1 Buck with FCW. That load patterns like a very wide slug at 30'.

Nothing wrong with a G34 or G35 as a nightstand gun especially on a homestead.
Personally I have a G19 that serves multiple purposes. EDC/HD/SD etc, etc.

A "long slide" Glock is defined as one with 6.0-inch barrel. They are the G17L in 9mm, G24 in 40SW, and G40 in 10mm. The 5.3-inch barrel G34 in 9mm, G35 in 40SW, and G41 in 45ACP are "competition" or "tactical/practical" models.
An all-OEM long-slide 6.0-inch Gen4 (or better, a Gen5 with Locking Block Pin) in 357SIG is my never-to-be-fulfilled dream Glock. I'd put a TLR-4 light/laser on it and call it ready for anything home or outside.
In lieu of the unavailable, a G24 would make a pretty good weapon for the OP's intents. It can be a little hard to find, however, so maybe a G35 or G40 instead.
I'd never choose anything in 9x19mm, nor would I be enthusiastic about 45ACP.

If you wanted to go with 10mm, The G-40 has a 6" barrel.
You might be able to get a 357sig barrel for it.

if your looking for outside defense on a farm or rural home i would consider a shotgun or AR platform. points better and only hits count. i want a huge advantage over any folks trying to do harm, being able to make an accurate hit on them quickly at 50 feet to 100 yards seems like a good deal to me.
inside a house , even a large one the barrel length of a handgun does not really interest me much. 3.5 to 5 inched seems great. glock 19 or 5 inch 1911, whatever .

Glock 34 is same size as 1911. I have recently gone to 17l for the extra fps, range , field and HD night stand.

Get yourself a pistol caliber carbine, like the CX4 Storm.
It’s the ultimate longslide.
Or if you expect a half dozen body armored thugs to break down your door, go with a true rifle, like a Tavor X95 if you’ve got the scratch. Or an AR if you’re on a budget.

I have a 17L. I like it for the cool factor, but for defensive purpose a shorter barrel is easier to extract out of a typical defensive holster--> less arm movement, means faster top get the shot(s) off. 19 is my general purpose gun as far as best in physical compromises.
I've got a G 24. With some Double tap 180 gr. it churns out a incredible 640 foot pounds of energy per shot according to my crony.. If I load up a 22 round clip I've got the most powerful all factory handgun ever made energy wise. 23 rounds total at 640 foot pounds each.I havn't took a coyote out to 100 yards but I would be very confident at 50 with a rest. The thing is lazer accurate.

I'm down in a draw and all of a sudden I see a pack of 9 coyotes up on a small rise headed for the livestock. Distance 125 yards moving at an angle about 5 mph. You have to take out the leader, and fast.

In my opinion you can't go wrong with any of the longer than standard Glock "Practical/Tactical" pistol models; the G34 in 9mm, the G35 in 40S&W, or the G41 in 45ACP. Their longer slide/barreled bretheren are the G17L in 9mm, G24 in 40S&W, or the G40 in 10mm.
I'm fond of the 5.31" barreled Practical/Tacticals, owning a Gen3 G35 in 40S&W/357SIG, and a Gen4 G41 in 45ACP. Both are the size of the 1911 and could easily fill your intended role.

Both the above are a real pleasure to shoot.
I also liked the idea of an even longer slide model, so I built a 6.02"/6.61" barreled 10mm Glock based off of a Gen3 G21SF frame, in essence mimicking a G40 using a Lone Wolf Distributor slide & barrel(s), with Meprolight greenies, and a Streamlight TLR-1s that I occasionally mount as seen below, to come up with this:
Thanks to it's longer slide and overall weight it feels like shooting your average 4"+ barreled all steel full size 9mm pistol, while being stupid accurate.
In regards to the G41, it's longer barrel/slide and reduced slide width when compared to the G21, and the fact that it weighs 2.84 oz less than the shorter length G21, helped make my decision easier between the two. Note the slide width differences between the two models shown in the image below: G21 on the left, G41 on the right:
Definately search out your options and go for it...I can't see how you could possibly be displeased with any of the "longer" slide Glock models

I plan to work up some high velocity loads for my 17L to shoot coyotes at distance. Fortunately you’ll never have to shoot an alpha coyote in self defense, they do not operate like that. I have seen them running around catching rats while bush hogging and have missed a few with my G19.
My only coyote pistol kill to date was with a G26 and the surefire ‘backup’ light I carry.
I always grab the AR if I hear a coyote or strange sounds at night, but at 4 AM while getting car packed for work all I had was a pistol. Used the geography of the old former cotton field to loop around and intercept her (wanted to confirm those bobbing red eyes were absolutely a coyote). First shot was at 20 to 25 yards, rolled her. Chase ensued with several more shots fired.
No I don’t carry a box of Gold Dots in my pocket, they were in the glove box. It seemed like a cutesy picture idea at 4AM before my morning coffee
My dream long range critter pistol for farm carry would be a G40 MOS with a 9x25 Dillon Barrel (not compensated), Leupold Deltapoint Pro, and a Surefire 300x Ultra. That’s a lot of money though.
