I went to open my safe this morning, but to my dismay, it just made a weak-azzed buzzing sound after I entered the code... without opening. :crying: I thought I may have just needed to put in a fresh battery, but no dice. I tried all of the trouble shooting advice on the web, but I still can't get the dang thing open. It's a Browning safe, I think made by ProSteel, with an electronic S&G lock. I'm sure I'm not the first to experience this, so what have any of you had to go through to get this fixed? Thanks in advance!

Yikes, that's one of my worst fears, lol.

    Is it still under warranty?

(I've got a twenty year old Liberty and could never figure out why anyone would want one that didn't have a dial.) (Anyone ever have batteries that leaked (like my best flashlights -- what a pisser!) that gunked up their safe's lock?)

Sounds like it's time to get a little physical. Body slam the door and also the hand-lever and try again. Some times these things don't have the "oooompf" to release if under stress or dry. When and if you do get open , lightly oil the mechanism.

    Good luck.!:wavey:

I don't think it's still under warranty. I bought it at Sportsman's Whorehouse before they packed up shop and left town (2008). Unfortunately, the warranty information is securely locked in the safe.

I would go on Browning's website and see if you could dig up some contact info and call/email them.

    Or call a local locksmith.

OH NO!!! Mine is acting funny and I called them and had to leave a message. I get a soft click when you enter the code once in a while. Not the normal solid click that you get.

I believe the warranty was 5 years on the lock system? I bought mine this year.

    Best of luck to you.

Call the manufacturer. This is another good reason to register your safe with the manufactuer. If something goes wrong, they will many times fix it. There are safes out there that have a keyed operated lock underneath of the keypad just for such a situation. Good luck man and keep us posted.

    Call S&G lock.
    Then call a locksmith.

Ditto on the old school dial. Write it down in a few places, and even if you vapor lock on the combo, you're never "locked out" . I don't trust anything without a key or a dial, or both. Mine is an old Browning.

    Call Browning. Explain situation.

Call safesmith. Pay to have safe opened IF Browning is unwilling to help.

Have safesmith bring an S&G mechanical lock with him.
Think of a combination that you want the safesmith to program into the mechanical lock.

I won't have an electronic lock for the very reason you're having problems.

I passed up a great deal on a good safe a couple months ago... It had an S&G keypad lock... I am holding out for one with a S&G dial.

Just happened to my cousins out of warranty safe and cost him $650. The guy had to basically destroy the key pad and then he put a brand new one on except this time he had the guy install a dial with key lock.

    Best of luck to you

I had a safe drilled and opened almost a year ago, and I think it was around $350 (don't remember exact $$$) to drill the lock, open the safe and install a new S&G mechanical lock.

The safesmith charged 'by the hour' to open the safe, and a flat fee for repairing the holes (two locks) installing the new lock.
