My bank only offers drive through service these days. There are two 'stations' that service customers. Both were occupied, with no one waiting when I pulled up. I put myself in a position between the two, waiting for one to open. I was there about 10 minutes. A mini van pulls in behind me and starts on the horn. I shrugged my shoulders and ignored him. He pulled up to my right and tried to ease past, with about one foot of clearance. I had my windows down and asked him WTH his hurry was. He said there were 2 lines and I should pick one. I said there were 2 windows and one line, similar to the current grocery store situation where everyone lines up behind one another and go to the available cashiers in turn. I also said I had been waiting for 10 minutes and should have the benefit of the next available teller. A window opened up then and I drove there to complete my business. I'm not sure there is a right way to act politely in this situation, but I favor my approach. Any thoughts based on your locale and norms?

Around here it's pick one line and stick with it. Of course for me I always manage to choose the slowest one.

Online banking and use of the ATM keeps me out of the lines.

Pick a line unless there is a sign that says wait for the next available teller/atm

I have plenty of experience with this at fuel stations. 27 gas pumps and two diesel pumps.

Pick one and sit behind the gasshole while they are inside shopping for snacks to fill their fat faces.

I am in the pick a line crowd. Weird you asked him what the hurry was when you are obviously trying to take up two lines so you get through the fastest possible. :)

It might be geographic location specific since I have never seen a grocery store with a next available line around here.

It was like that here at the start of the pandemic.

    It’s back to normal now.

If the lines are crowded, pick a line. If they're not very crowded, do whatever you want.

I wouldn't interact with the other drivers in such a situation. There's zero chance of improving their etiquette and a decent chance of a shouting match or worse. Benefit / negatives ratio = 0.

You're the one that chose a diesel. You're in the minority. Deal with it. For the record, I purposely pick a pump with a green handle just to piss off diesel truck drivers.

The line idiots I hate are the folks that want to keep 40 feet from the car in front of them.

I would agree with the pick a lane approach but do see what you mean.

At my bank there are lanes marked on the pavement, so you have to pick a line. But if nobody else is behind me I will change lanes if one opens up.

What annoys me is when somebody stops at the first box (there are two in each lane) instead of pulling up to the second one so somebody else can use the first one. There's not enough room to pull around them like at a gas station.

If there are a lot of cars at the drive thru I will go inside where there is a single line waiting for the next available teller. It moves faster.

    First world problems LOL.

Unlike some of the other responses here that involve flammable situations like gas pumps, or people in line at a grocery check-out, yours was one where there were no such hazards. I believe most would agree with me that you had the right to shoot the driver of the mini van.

Interesting . Winter time I go to a self service car wash, single lane , it rounds the building ,where five pull in wash areas are . Most stay in single lane and lead car gets first open one ,just like any roped off line in a bank with many tellers .

Your situation it seems like pick one as you have to spit two to wait ,car wash has one leading up .

if I have to go to the bank I call ahead and they greet me at the door with an envelope, if I have to deposit, I sit and have coffee while the gal brings it up for me .

How does that extra space make the line move slower?

Dave. At that point people can pull ahead from another line. Also the drive thru now is waiting several minutes to make each order as the que is longer and longer.
