Why not just step on the side of the pool and let the water run out?

    Rodents just don't appreciate assistance.

When I was kid, I had a gerbil who got his leg caught in his running wheel. He was screaming. I stuck my hand in the cage to try to get his leg free, and he chomped down on my finger. His teeth were buried deep, and he wouldn't let go. Definitely drew some blood.

    You're welcome you little MFer.

Our very furry (I mean really long fur) cat got caught in a piece of 15 1/2 gage barbed wire one time. It was going crazy fighting the barbed wire and making things worse.

Fortunately I saw it happen. I had some real thick, heavy duty, leather gloves on my tractor, and a good sharp pocket knife in my pocket. It took me several minutes of struggle to cut the cat free. She was missing some big plugs of fur, but other wise unharmed.

I managed to do it all without cutting her. But without those gloves, my hands would have been a bloody mess. She was biting and clawing me like crazy while I worked.

Same with a hurting dog. Even your beloved pet Fido will bite you if it's hurting enough, when you're trying to help. I'm sure there are exceptions, but they usually just don't understand.

When squirrels get riled up, they make the Tasmanian Devil look like a teddy bear. Nothing but pointy little teeth and claws.

Try insects. I was once so severely hammered that I attempted to help an ant, which was carrying a huge crumb, to cross my rather large patio to where I figured his destination to be. I think it resulted in some miscommunication.
