A young first mate on a sailing vessel had partied too much on shore the previous night and made quite a mess of his duties in the morning. The captain responded by placing an entry into his log that read "the first mate was drunk today"

Although the first mate begged and pleaded with the captain to remove the entry, the captain refused to change his log explaining that there was nothing untrue or incorrect in it.

The first mate gave up and made a simple entry into his log to even things out. It read : "The Captain was sober today"
