So what do all you Catholics give up for Lent?

I'm not Catholic, but I'm married to one and my kids are raised Catholic so I participate too.

I plan on doing what I did last year and giving up posting on internet forums. I'll be going insane for the next couple of days without Glock Talk, but after I few days I notice I have a lot more spare time on my hands.

Smoking. With the money I'll save I think I'll join the local range.

Caffeine. I will be unable to funtion for the first couple of days and will be very grumpy. It gets better after a week or so and then I am okay but man, it is hard. I guess that is why they call it a sacrifice!

I don't give up a particular food during Lent. However, I try and reduce the amount I consume.
So, instead of eating three square meals a day, I usually try and skip dinner.

For me this year its junk food. Maybe its the holidays or all this snow has got me into comfort food mode, but I found myself eating a lot of candy, cookies, and chips recently. Lent is just a good excuse to put myself on a 40 day diet.

I quit smoking during Lent 7 years ago and I have not smoked since.

Lent is not all about giving up some favorite food. It can be doing positive things such as going to daily mass, reading the bible or prayer and meditation. In a way this is giving up something; some of my spare time. Thats what I plan to do.

I gave up caffeine a couple of years ago due to gout attacks. It was very difficult to do.

It is something that I remove everyday from my belly button and place in a jar on my nightstand.

    Yellow M&M's.

Picking them all out is quite the sacrifice.

    From Wikipedia:

Many Catholics are pretty big on the Self Denial part. That's where the no meat on Friday stuff comes from.

But as Walt408 said, it's not all about denial, it's about preparing yourself for Easter.

Last year I gave up trying to lose weight, and that worked so well that this year I gave up trying to quit smoking.

    A few questions.

    Im not catholic either.

Do you participate for your kids sake?

If not then why practice something you dont believe in?

Also, I seen you copied and pasted the Wikipedia on lent.

Why not just tell us what it is in your own words.

I think its humerous when I ask a catholic what lent is and what its for.

A lot of them dont know why they do it, its just how they were brought up.

So can anyone tell me in your own words what lent is actuall for and what it means to you.

I am curious about the practice of the catholics.
