50's something Dodge with "three on the column (tree)".

Recently I was trying to explain this to my young nephew (he's in his 30's).

He asked me if I actually meant that the gear shift was on the floor. (Guess he was hinting that I'm getting older and I forgot....)

I tried to explain that the gear shift was on the column of the steering wheel. I got a -

My drivers ed car was a 1975 olds delta 88 4 door. then I moved up to moms 1968 mercury park lane convertible until I go my first car a 1973 pinto wagon. It got 20+ miles to the gallon and regular gas was 56cents a gallon. Then I got a need for speed and we shoved a v8 engine in a 72 pinto hatch back and then a 1970 Coronet R/T with a 440 six pack, it averaged 3mpg because I was always driving with the six pack opened up

1977 Volare station wagon, slant-6 engine, and oddly enough, three on the tree (with an overdrive button).

Took my road test on a 1967 Ford something, but I had been driving tractors and farm trucks as soon as my legs were long enough to reach the peddles. I actually prefer a manual transmission over an automatic and my former husband and I had an old Ford pickup at one time that was a three on the tree.

The most recent manual I drove was a Deuce and a Half my friend owns. It was a ball! Oh wait - I helped move hay for another friend sometime after that!

Most younger people will never have the experience of driving a manual let alone mastering it. Such a shame.

1977 Ford LTD II is what I drove for my test. But I learned with a 1965 Chevy pickup (3 on the tree). Parents wouldn't let me use the pickup for the test because this was back when a State trooper was in the vehicle with you, not a DMV twerp, and there was no way it would pass inspection at the time. I drove and parallel parked that big boat for the first time that day.

Actually learned on my dads 50 Chrysler in "upstate" NY (Shrub Oak, hey it was upstate for me being from Brooklyn) then my dad bought me a 1935 Chevy, ( it and I were both 16 years old.) IIRC it had 3 on the floor and mechanical brakes!
Used it to go from Peekskill Hollow Road where we had a summer house, to Lake Mahopac. where I had a boat (Penn Yan 15 foot with a 7 1/2 hp Scott Attwater outboard...this was 1951....I 'patched the rusted out doors with Bondo, and painted the car with a Flit Gun....(took a lot of pumping up the sprayer) Real fun for 2 summers.... gave it to my Uncle as a station car....I bought a 1953 Dodge convertible First Hemi engine..... great car....
Good old days ...gas 5 gallons for a buck...
