Tried the sights, optics, laser forum but not much activity there. Recently purchased a 22 mag rifle and considering a scope. Is a laser bore sight the way to go for getting the scope zeroed in? The rifle is a Marlin XT with grooved receiver and drilled and tapped for sight mount. Open to suggestions since I known very little about scopes and mounting.

The bore-sighter is used to get the scope "close".

You can do the same thing by removing the bolt from a bolt action and looking through the bore.

Secure the gun, look through the bore, then adjust the scope to the same spot you see in the bore.

Without a bore-sighter and unable to look through the barrel, simply mount the scope and set your target at 20 yards or so, shoot and adjust then move the target out to about 100 yards and finalize adjustments.

Final step on any sight-in is to shoot the gun and make final adjustments.

bore sighter is the biggest waste of $40, TWICE... basically for the money you can sight with rounds. Start at 25yrs/m as was stated, preferably with a gun vise. shoot at the spot marked at 25m. bullet entrance will be off your spot/target somewhat. you now put your scope at the bullet mark and start turning turrets until it lines up with your intended target/mark. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. you should be hitting it now dead on. move to 100yrs/m and sight your rifle to that now. Most of the times you are working with 3-9x scope on a 22s, so there is probably no compensation ring for the distance, so just shoot multiple groups of 5, try to get a grouping and adjust your scope accordingly. your 1/4 or 1/8 is set up for a 100yrs/m thus adjust vertical horizontal clicks according to your 100yrs/m groups. And then... you will find out that the variations between different kind of ammo are pretty substantial. Thus your best bet is get 50-100rds of different ammo. find the one you are shooting the tightest groups with then go ahead and order 5000rd brick of it and enjoy :) for a long time. Good luck.

Are you sure about this? I think you just doubled your original error. With the gun held in its original position, the scope should be adjusted to move the reticle to the actual POI.

you are correct, embarrassed that I typed this, but not going to edit :).

so correction, now that I actually went into the garage with my daughters pallet gun :):

1) sight onto the target and touch one off
2) sight onto the target and move your turrets until crosshairs are dead center with a bullet hole
3) might have to repeat it in order to fine tune it
4) THANK YOU bentbiker FOR CATCHING MY ERROR.
